I like electronic music. It’s that simple, but I’d like to get into some high quality composition rather than just listening to the fruits of other peoples labors. I am not very familiar with the dos and don’ts of music composition and the various aspects such as midi sequencing, etc. I am indeed a neophyte. Is there anyone who can offer some insight as to how to proceed with purchasing good software and, if necessary, hardware so that I might venture into this endeavor? I would truly appreciate the assistance.
do we have a burgeoning electronic music community here?
I don’t think this is the best forum, but I can’t resist the chance to feel like an expert.
Ok,if you’re on the Mac, and you want to do it all on your computer, I think Rebirth is a great place to start. It’s set up with drum machine type controls and loops that are easy and fun to use for the beginner. I hear that Acid is now Mac compatible , this seems to be THE program to use if you make loop based music. Vision DSP is a great all around MIDI sequencer digital audio package with real time effects if you want to step outside of the loop based world (web download is only 60 bucks. Cheap!). As far as hardware I reccommend Pulsar, its a combo software synth, sampler, and sound card ( with a price tag to match $1300 although its cheaper than buying these items seperately). The nord lead also rocks and seems to be THE thing for the trance scene.
Good luck,

Nen, you are not the only one with your tastes here, obviously. I’m a mac-based electronic music freak and I can vouch for the fact that macs are more than able to hold their own in the world of music creation. Rebirth is definitely the place to start in my opinion. By the way, what kind of music do you like? I’m an industrial freak, you can find me on Front 242’s mailing list also. Happy Looping.
BTW Nen, if you’re interested in printing your music in sheet form for more traditional instruments, there’s some good software that can take midi files and convert them into sheet music.
“Finale” is probably the best, but it’s kinda pricey. A couple hundred, I think. I use a cheaper program called “Studio 6.0” from Midisoft (around $75). It’s pretty good, but it’s got some bugs.
God is my co-pilot. Blame Him.
