Music with awesome brass parts

Haydn trumpet concerto in E flat

Hummel trumpet concerto in E flat

Mozart horn concerto in E flat

Third movement of Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2

Nice Weather for Ducks by Lemonjelly has a great brass section beginning in the middle of the song, that bursts in and elevates it from cute techno into something wonderful.

I totally agree that Kenton always had a very good brass section. I found one of my favorites on youtube: 23 North - 82 West from New Concepts of Artistry in Rhythm (the album cover is really cool, I think. Not the one in the vid but the original one).

And I just remembered - a lot of reggae, rock steady and ska often has very nice brass. Like Don Drummond’s trombone - wonderful. Listen here.

Why couldn’t I find this Stan Kenton vid earlier?
Artistry in Boogie

Dvorak’s New World Symphony really brings it, especially the French horn.

Little Feat’s *Texas Twister *has seriously rockin’ horns, too.

As a marching band geek and Styx fan way back in the days of my youth (early 80s), I always thought that someone should do a brassy arrangement of Renegade.

Lots of good stuff mentioned so far; I just wanted to add History Repeating by Propellerheads.

This is the old Hartford Whalers (of the NHL) theme song- Brass Bonanza. Always brings a smile to my face.

Vehicle by Ides of March is tres awesome*
*That means three awesome

How has no one mentioned Louis Armstrong yet??

One of my favorite songs of all time (and it mentions Satchmo ;)). The opening measures are my ringtone.

Seconded. And as James Bond was mentioned up thread, I thought I’d single out his amazing work for Casino Royale (1967 version). One of the jauntiest pieces of music ever written.

Kanye West sampled this and I don’t know the original source, but it’s awesome

It’s from “Move On Up” by Curtis Mayfield, mentioned in its own right upthread. It IS awesome

Glenn Miller “In the Mood”

Groovin’ Hard – best version I could find at YouTube.

I’ve found versions of some of the pieces I’ve recommended with much better audio. If you’ve already listened to the previous ones, please give these new links a listen. Any problems, PM me.

Janacek, Sinfonietta, first mvmt.

Dukas, fanfare from La Peri

Gabrieli, Canzona per sonare no. 2

It was great to see the movie “Brassed Off” mentioned in post #10. The all-brass version of the overture from William Tell will have you looking out for arrows.

In the 1960 version of ‘Ocean’s Eleven’, with music by the immortal Nelson Riddle, right after Danny Ocean (Frank Sinatra) and Vince Massler (Buddy Lester) outwit a casino security guard and sneak their techie in to do his advance work, and Vince comically wipes his brow,

… there is 30-45 seconds of the most sublime jazzy big-band music I have ever heard in my life.

I’m omni-musical - I’m a guitar player, and not especially a fan of brass/big bands. But that passage is like Louis Armstrong on heroin on steroids.

Stan Kenton’s orchestra had 5 screamin’ trumpets and 4 or 5 trombones. Later, he even had a special horn made (the “mellophonium”) and added a section of them to the band.

Duke Ellington had amazing brass sections as well, especially his trombones (they always play better harmony than trumpets anyway ;)).

I’ve become a Dizzy Gillespie fan ever since I heard his version of “Vida Mia.”

Who would have thought tango and trumpet would go together so well?

“Crazy in Love” by Beyonce and Jay-Z has a terrific brass riff. It was actually taken from the Chi-Lites’ “Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So)”, but this is a rare case where I think the ripoff is superior to the original.

Chicago has been mentioned, but I would nominate “Beginnings” as a specific song.

Also, anyone remember the group Dreams?
