Musical bands simlar to the Pouges

Now I have you know I love the Pouges.
A nice cross between the sex pistols and the cheiftians.

Anyone have any recomendations for other bands who produce and sing this style or something similar?

Thanks in advance,
Osip

Give Dropkick Murphys a listen. They’re not in the same league as The Pogues (IMHO, of course), but they’re still a fun mix of punk and Irish folk. They do a kickass version of the Boston University fight song!

Allmusic is always a good friend:

Shane McGowan and the Popes with the Pogues “singer”. They did some tasty stuff.

Flogging Molly
Black 47

Dropkick Murphys are pretty fun, but not quiet the same vein.

I’d Say Floggin Molly is a present day version of the Pogues.

Hard call cuz McGowan’s voice is so one-of-kind. i’m sure you’ve heard of these… but what the hay…

ah! classic

Allmusic put Dexy’s Midnight Runners up as similar to the Pogues?!?

I…It’s…Does this strike anyone else as just wrong?

Although I would like to hear McGowan growling out “Come on Eileen”.

You might also want to check out a Richmond, VA band called Carbon Leaf.

I saw Flogging Molly at the Warped Tour. Mrs. Moto and I were very impressed.

I like Dropkick Murphys better than the Pogues, so there :stuck_out_tongue:

Not as wrong as Kathryn Tickell…

Another vote for Flogging Molly. Sometimes their sound is a little too consistent and songs end up sounding the same, but it’s a great sound nonetheless.

Like Mr. Moto, I saw them at Warped Tour, and they got the best response of anyone, on a bill with NOFX, New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Bosstones, etc.

I agree with everyone who said the
Popes and Flogging Molly. Its hard to believe the guy who sings for them sang in the 80s proto hair-metal band Fastway, whose claim to fame was “Say What You Will” They were better than, say, Whitesnake, but not by much.

Dropkick Murphys? Ehhh…I dunno…they have their moments, but, IMHO, they’re pretty generic new school “streetpunk”. Plus, Most DM fans I know are assholes, present company excluded of course  .

Stiff Little Fingers are a pretty good Irish band, that combines all kinds of influences in to their own sound, although, they’re not as “Traditional” as the Pouges.

Also check out Nips/Nipple Erectors…featuring future pogues members. Great stuff.

The Pouges took a flying leap over the shark when they kicked Shane out. They’re pretty much useless now, while Shanes making some of the best music of his career.

Jon

Filthy Thieving Bastards, especially their album A Melody of Retreads and Broken Quills. Punk, country and Irish folk music, featuring members of the bands the Swingin’ Utters, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and Camper Van Beethoven.

I’m listening to it right now

Have you tried any Tom Waits?

I’ve always thought he wrote songs along the same lines as Shane, but without the traditional music.

Boiled in Lead.

I don’t think they are still a band, they are out of Minneapolis, so Irish inspired instead of Irish.

Try Siobhan. They sound so much like the Pouges, it’s kinda scary.

Members of BIL often play the Half-Time Rec on Front street in Saint Paul (The smokiest bar known to mankind) Plus, they always re-unite on Saint Paddies day for their annual gig at First Avenue.

Dear god, Siobahn isn’t even attempting to sound even slightly different than the Pouges.
