Musical Nasalness(Nasality?)

In the article about nose size having an effect on singing quality, reference was made to tonal nasality being an accident. But I remeber hearing an interview with Eddy Arnold when he and I were much younger in which he stated that he deiberately made a decision not to go “nasal” as some of his contemporaries did.
Later, much later, I read in the following referenced book about the practice of Prebyterian ministers from the Scots-Irish section of the U. K. of singing through their noses, such pratice believed to create sounds sacred to Jehovah. This was transported to the USA and as these Celtic peoples populated the Appalachian area, became the source of Hillbilly or Country-Western music as we have come to know it, if not today, at least as we grew up.
