In Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat Major, in the second measure, there is a symbol I have never really understood. Above the trebel staff, there is a flat sign, a sideways “S,” and a natural sign. The music is five notes played in the time of four–five 32nd notes. What is this symbol and phrase called?
