Musicians as Movie Actors

Cher is a mediocre singer, but a GREAT actress.

Both Wahlbergs, Mark and Donnie, are very good actors, and Dwight Yoakam was the best thing in “Sling Blade.” Of course, he was only good thing in “Sling Blade.” Odd to find out that he’s bald under the cowboy hat, though.

MissTangerine: Mick Jagger was in a film called Performance: British, 1970, directed by Nicholas Roeg, rated X but not a porno. He was essentially playing himself; which may not constitute Acting, but isn’t necessarily bad acting.

Remember, I’m pulling for you; we’re all in this together.

Mick Jagger has been in seven movies (not including movies where he played himself). His most ‘memorable’ role was probably in ‘Freejack’.

Sinatra’s definitely the best. I’d also mention Dean Martin (“Rio Bravo”), Bing Crosby (the “Road” pictures w/Hope), Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and in the surreal category, James Taylor in “Two Lane Blacktop.”

John Prine will have a significant supporting role in Billy Bob Thornton’s new movie. Early reports are that he does an incredible job.

Hoagy Carmichael was fine in TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT.

Sinatra was probably the best at both, a good singer and a good actor.

The Beatles all had some acting talent. Ringo was good in 200 MOTELS and SON OF DRACULA, and John in HOW I WON THE WAR. And, of course, HELP and A HARD DAYS NIGHT.

I happened to see Petula Clark last year in SUNSET BOULEVARD (the musical). She was fine, but most of her acting has been on the stage, not movies.

My first thought agrees with Cristi. Dwight Yoakam was marvelous in Sling Blade.

I also have to second Wahlberg, Cher, Bette Midler, and espeically Sinatra (for The Manchurian Candidate if nothing else).
