I would like to see a list of musicians who made music while on heroin. Here’s a few that I know of:
Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) (Died 1994)
Layne Staley (Alice in Chains, Mad Season) (Died 2002)
Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver) (Still crazy dancing in 2008)
Bradley Nowell (Sublime) (Died 1996)
I am particularly interested in the vocalists, but feel free to include others. Thanks!
Eric Clapton the the immortal Keith Richards come to mind.
John Lennon
Janis Joplin
Jimi Hendrix
Keith Richards
Lou Reed
Phil Lynott
Tommy Bolin
Paul Kossoff (Free)
…just for starters…
David Gahan (Depeche Mode) - clinically dead in 1996, survived and still making music
Dwayne Goettel (Skinny Puppy) - died August 1995

Thanks. I will look into that. For those curious, I think musicians on heroin make some of the craziest music and I am always interested in trying to figure out what the heck they were saying (if they intended to really say anything of importance at all).
[edit] Wow, they are really coming now. Thanks all!
Shane Macgowan (lead singer - Pogues) - inexplicably still alive
ETA:
Good luck on that one when it comes to Macgowan.
Ray Charles
Billie Holiday
Miles Davis
Chet Baker
plus hundreds of other jazz musicians

Walter Becker
Steven Tyler & Joe Perry (“The Toxic Twins”)
Oh yeah… Jimmy Page. For most of Zeppelin’s career.
I would have chosen “undead,” but it’s the same thing.

Yoko Ono
Sid Vicious
(Lest you think heroin use makes you a good musician.)
David Byrne used heroin at some point, but I don’t know if he ever wrote or recorded anything while under the influence.
J.G. Thirlwell, aka Jim Foetus (creator of industrial music in Foetus, also of Steroid Maximus).
The old Celine, or the new Celine ?
Wonder what she did with the old guy. Isn’t he a junkie?
It seems nobody’s mentioned the venerable James Brown!
Peace,

John Phillips
David Crosby
Jim Morrison

This list would probably be much shorter if you had asked for the ones that didn’t
