Muslim boycott of Holocaust memorial, explain to me please this isn't true

“We wrote to the Home Office three or four weeks ago. We said the issue of the Holocaust is not really the concern. But we have now expressed our unwillingness to attend the ceremony because it excludes ongoing genocide and human rights abuses around the world and in the occupied territories of Palestine,” he said.

Is this the work of a fringe group or is this Muslim organisation prominent, if it is, pretty shocking.

This weekend the boycott by the leaders of Britain’s 1.2m Muslims was condemned by Khalid Mahmood, the MP for Birmingham Perry Barr. “I’m proud to be a Muslim. But if people are boycotting this then I think it’s a mistake. People who were exterminated in the Holocaust were not just Jews. There were Romany gypsies as well. Anybody who is interested in human rights should support this remembrance.”

What is the problem with remembering the Holocaust, can’t politics be swept aside for one moment to remember this terrible moment?

Well, the point that they seem to be making is that not enough people are being remembered at this terrible moment.

I don’t think you can have “humans” without also having “politics”. Even the tsunami ended up having “politics”.

It doesn’t sound like they have a problem with the idea of a Holocaust Memorial, just that they want it to be more inclusive. I don’t really agree, and I’m very uncomfortable with the explicit inclusion of Palestinians in their complaint (I’m moderatly sympathetic to the Palestinian’s situation, but including it here strikes me as inappropriate and politically motivated), but I’m not shocked or outraged by it.
