Must things to do in Mexico City

In a few months I am traveling to Mexico City with some friends. This is meant to be a fun trip (not business).

Any recommendations of things I really should not miss (food or museum or whatever)?

I have, of course, searched for ideas but always nice to hear from people who have personal experiences to recommend.

Thanks in advance!

We were in CDMX for 10 days last year.

  • Teotihuacan
  • Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s house and Cayocan Market
  • Take one of the gondolas over the city
  • Anthropology Museum
  • Jumex Museum
  • Museo Soumaya
  • Walking around Roma Norte/La Condesa
  • Mural Museum
  • FINCA DON PORFIRIO

How easy is that to get to from Mexico City?

We took a tour. The bus picked us up in Roma Norte and included a tour guide. We paid about USD$40/person for 7:30AM-2PM.

You can also DIY it with an Uber or a public bus and then hire a guide when you get there.

If the line is too long, visit the Trotsky murder house a few blocks away. Eat lots of street tacos and at least try the grasshoppers.

Food?

I consider myself adventurous when it comes to food but not sure I can do that. I know they are fine as a food source but not sure I can get my brain around that one.

Without an advanced reservation you aren’t likely to get in to Casa Azul.

I’ve planned a long weekend in Mexico City, but have yet to do it. My plans include Teotihuacan, National Museum of Anthropology, Bicycle Sunday, and a taco tasting tour, plus whatever else I have time for (watching this thread!).

Mexico City is pleasant. Great food. Safe if you follow basic taxi rules and use common sense. Teotihuacan is a must. You can generally get there by public bus in an hour from hotel zones and touristy areas in central Mexico City, and there are as many tours as you would expect.

The Anthropology Museum is great but huge, and can be “much of a muchness” unless very interested in the topic - I spent seven hours seeing it all. @FinsToTheLeft has provided a very good list. I have not been there recently enough to list the most au courant places, but have heard there are many.

Obligatory link (doubtless already seen, top attractions rated around 4.6/5 by 5000 people)…

If you are interested in Diego Rivera murals the motherlode is at the Ministry of Education building.

This was the Mural Museum I mentioned, it was definitely one of the highlights. It’s also free!

The best taxi rule is to not use them, there are apparently too many scams. Uber and Bolt got us everywhere in the city, usually for $6-7+tip which was great considering we were 4 people.

No. That’s a different museum that when I was there in 2016 only had one Rivera mural…but perhaps his best in Mexico City.

But the SEP has 117 Rivera murals and is also free.

Mexico City’s subway system is easy to use and probably the best public transit bargain in the world.

Sorry, I mixed them up. You are correct.
