My 5-year-old and Pop Culture References.

After seeing a preview of the flick “Kangaroo Jack”, I introduced LilMiss to the wonders of “Rapper’s Delight”… a song that I know from when I was her age.
You all know it-

And if you know have that song in yer noggin the rest of the day, I have done my nefarious job.

I was at the video store with my two year old last month, where they have a life-sized cardboard cutout of Shrek. She pointed and said “Look Mommy, Yoda!” And started singing the Weird Al song, “Yoda, Yo Yo Yo Yo Yoda…” (to Lola by the Kinks.) I was so proud!

When my youngest daughter was about 2 or 3, I was pushing her in the cart through a Target store. As we were going past the end caps in the shoe section, she reaches over, grabs a pair of bright red pumps, and sings,
“Look dad… ‘Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes.’”

My theoretical child also will be raised on Weird Al. You, Morgainelf, are a good mother.

I just gotta say, I absolutely love “Rapper’s Delight” - the reference made me grin. That is all.

My mom is a grade 2 teacher, but taught grade 1 for a while. In the gr 1 math books, the “shapes” section often has “real” pictures of things that are squatre, round, etc. My mom often has the kids describe what they are.

When she came to the picture of the vinyl record, EVERY KID, EVERY YEAR would say “CD!”.

I’m only 21, but even I remember puting a vinyl record on the turn-table to listen to. Of course, it was often “Alvin and the Chipmunks”, but it still counts! I even remember having a Stevie Wonder record, and I would play “I just called (to say I love you)” over and over and over…
