The fire is out. Fortunately no deaths, although I believe the number of injured firefighters is up to three now. There does not seem to be any more property damage - the flames were stopped from entering the City Bowl neighbourhoods, in some cases within meters of houses. For those with Facebook there is a collection of photos here showing the extent of the damage.
The students have now returned to campus except for two residences which were damaged. A remarkable video here from one of those residences showing their experiences. The damage to the Botany building which @MrDibble and I were talking about above, struck with horrible irony the offices of the Plant Conservation Unit. I say irony because some of their research is apparently on wildfire management.
The damage to the library is yet to be fully determined, but word is that it is at least not as bad as we might have feared. There will still be terrible loss in the African Studies collection but it seems some of the most precious collections have been saved. It is said that fire doors installed quite recently prevented the fire from spreading into the rest of the library.
