I recently finished Neal Stephenson’s Reamde and thought it was very good; it’s more accessible than Stephenson’s earlier works, which is either good or bad (depending on your opinion of that stuff).
Another one I’d recommend, though more dark fantasy than science fiction, is The Last Werewolf by Glen Duncan, which is much more literary than one might expect from a “genre” novel.
Also, if you don’t have too many irrelevant purchases, you might be able to clean up your Amazon recommendations by going into your purchase history and marking them as “Gifts” or simply “Don’t use for recommendations” (available from the “Improve Your Recommendations” link on Your Amazon page). You can also do this from the individual recommendations themselves, if you click on the “Fix this” link they provide on the "Recommended because . . . " line. Not sure if it’s worth your time if there’s a lot of chaff there, though.
They also have something they call the “Amazon Betterizer” which presents a number of selections you can click to “Like” so they can present you with more relevant suggestions. I haven’t experimented with that one too much, not least of which because “betterizer” makes me want to hurl.
I really liked Wool. It’s a series of 5 short books, the first two are a bit slow (but still good) and the last three are a, “Oh shit it’s 2:00 AM I have to work in the morning! Well… just a few more pages…” kind of read.
I really enjoyed Zone One: A Novel by Colson Whitehead - it’s more post-apocalyptic/zombie than straight SF, tho.
I’ll second the reccos for Reamde & Ready Player One - in fact, I’d recommend co-reading them for a fun compare & contrast on MMORPG’s of the future…
Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway was also quite good, IMHO - in fact, it sort of reminded me of Reamde, except it was focused on clockwork and set in the UK instead of video gaming/high tech & Asia/US.
Ok, Grabbed Wool as well. Earlier I had grabbed “On Silver Wings” which, I believe is an independent author. I am enjoying it now…better than I thought it would be
Ok, half way through Ready Player One. Different. I kind of like it. I was a teen in the early 80’s and so get all the references I even played Dungeons of Daggorath when it came out…on a tape drive!
