My best birthday present (warning - geeky)

Today I received my birthday present from my two adult sons. They decided to get me a DNA test (it is actually mitochondrial DNA on this particular test.

So I’ve scraped the inside of my cheeks (oral), and popped the end of the scraper in the little tube and sealed it and the scum from my inner cheeks. The testing company will do their magic, and look for markers. For all of my life we have wondered if there was an Native American ancestor, and this test should be able to lay the question to rest. (I have shovel incisors, like those found in Native Americans, Chinese, and some Scandanavians…I’m pretty sure there are no Chinese or Scandanavians lurking in the family tree…)

So is this a cool gift or what? Have any of you had any DNA testing for genealogical reasons, and what did you find out (in general terms).

In 6 weeks I’ll know more about my Mom’s side of the family; there is almost nothing known of that branch of the family. Pretty exciting!

Do you know where they got it? I’m seeing a father’s day gift in the making.
