Ok, so on Friday, I had this folder with just about ALL of my best drawings that I was planning to send to a highschool I wanted to go to. Guess what happened to it. Just before I had left, I saw her looking through them. I thought, ‘That’s ok, she just wants to see them’ so I left. Turns out when I came back, she throws the entire folder in the trash:mad: . Luckily, the trash was not emptied. I am UNBELIEVABLY mad right now, seeing as how this was not an accident, and those are my best pics… :smack:
Ok,you weren’t too clear,so I’ll ask a question or two to bring full understanding of the situation that made you so angry.
How long did you leave for? Why did you leave without your folder? (This doesn’t excuse her action, but I would have asked the teacher for the folder the moment I was ready to leave.) Did you leave the room/floor, or the school? Isn’t there a place lost and found items go? Can you think of anything “controversial” about any of your drawings, that may have offended her. (Still not an excuse for her actions.)
I’d mention what happened to a teacher you trust, or the principal. Teachers are supposed to show respect for student property, not throw it away. It’s even worse, because it was art that she threw away. Mention it to someone who can speak to her about it on Monday.
I left for 5 minutes, due to a call to the office from the intercom in our classroom. AFAIK, there isn’t a place lost and found stuff goes, and nothing was controversial, just different people posing and different angles etc. (not naked or anything)
Was this folder with the rest of your books? Maybe even in your backpack? How did she end up with it in her hands? This was during class time? Students had not even left the classroom yet, much less the building, and she’s throwing away a folder full of drawings?
Ok,and now one final question. Was your name on the pictures,or folder? Because if it was plainly visible, this teacher has even more explaining to do. At least, she would if I were her boss.
Holy shit, that’s outrageous. Plan revenge immediately. Still, some of us may be a little unclear on the details. Was this after class? After school had finished? Was there anyone else in the room?
Let’s jump to conclusions, shall we?
Was this a folder full of sketches, say on lined paper, that looked like doodles, like something you’d done while you were bored in class? I can easily imagine a teacher, finding a pile of doodles in a folder with no name on them, would just toss 'em out.
Not meaning to single you out, but your “shoot first and ask questions later” response is scary.
We need more info here. Why were your pictures out of your hands? Were you just leaving them around? Why did the teacher pick them up? Did she know they were yours? Were they just sitting there, without any clue as to who they belonged to? Would someone who didn’t know what they were think they were important? Why did you leave something you consider valuable unattended?
And, most importantly, how do you know it wasn’t an accident? Are you saying your teacher maliciously threw your pictures away?
Don’t get me wrong. I’m glad you got your pics back. But some details are missing, and without 'em, I can’t pass judgement on your teacher’s actions.
Were you in art class, or were you messing around with your drawings in another class? I know when I was in school, a teacher would not have looked kindly on my doing other things on “their” time. Throwing them away was over the top, but even confiscating them would not have been out of line if you were working on or sharing your drawings in a non-related class.
I can see your points, Sionach and ** AudreyK **. I’ve already asked her similar questions, and recieved a little more information.

Sionach, if a teacher had confiscated a work folder I had brought to their class and then thrown it in the trash, because I had dared to bring it into the room, they would have soon found themselves apologizing profusely to me in front of the principal. The mere prescence of a folder from another class in the room, is not a valid reason to confiscate it.
Sometimes, there is no time to put your things from one class into your locker before the next class. I often ended up carrying folders from another class with me. So did my classmates. The teachers realized this, and would save any folders they found to try to find their owner. They actually cared whether or not the students in their classes passed other courses too, and would look out for their students. (Some would even help students out with homework from another class! After that day’s class goals were met,of course. )
I can understand a teacher being frustrated by a student who does not show respect by paying attention in class, and doing the work that has been assigned. I’ve never agreed with the teachers who would not allow students to study ahead, yet also would now allow them to do homework from other classes if they finished the assignment early. There is no evidence that shows whether Topaz was breaking any rules. She deserves the benefit of the doubt, though.
IMO this teacher is pretty callous. It’s just plain common decency/courtesy/compassion, to try to find the owner of a folder full of papers, whether they are math homework, or artwork. They have the same intrinsic value. The folder did not just manifest itself, someone in one of her classes brought it there. She should have tried to find the owner, if the identity of the person was not easily apparent.
I wasn’t breaking any rules, I don’t draw in her class because she is well known for ripping up pics in class. Actually, I don’t draw in anyone’s class, maybe because I’m afraid they’d do the same thing to me.
I still don’t have a clear picture of the incident. You were called out of the room, were gone for 5 minutes, and came back to find your drawings in the trash. You weren’t doodling or fooling around in class. That much I understand.
But where were you in relation to your drawings and the teacher before you left? Were your drawings near the rest of your belongings, and the teacher just happened to walk by? Or did you leave your drawings somewhere where it wasn’t clear they belonged to you? Was your name on the folder, or was it unmarked? Did the folder look important? Is it absolutely impossible that someone who didn’t know what it was would think it was garbage?
You mentioned you were going to send it to a high school you were interested in; I took this to mean that you don’t currently attend this school, and you were going to mail it to them or drop it off later. If this is true, I’m trying to understand why you kept the drawings out of your bag and out of your sight when they didn’t have to be.
I’m not saying it’s your fault the drawings got tossed in the garbage. I’m just trying to figure out what happened. Your description of the events hasn’t really been clear. So far as I can tell, your teacher wandered up to your stuff without any real reason, flipped through your drawings, and then tossed them in the garbage while you were out. If that’s exactly what happened, then I apologize for the pestering. It just sounds like a really odd scene that I can’t see happening.
