I was just killing some time on Twitter, when the following spilled out of my keyboard: “Religious strife will only end when all religions die out. Religions (considering our sinful nature) encourage us to divide, and hate, and try to destroy or subjugate others. Don’t listen to me, listen to thousands of years of history.”
Not bad, eh? Also not revolutionary thinking, but hey, it’s early.
Religions don’t do those things; people who twist religions to justify their own prejudices, lust for power, or territorial rage do those things. Abolish religions, and those same people will operate the same way; they’ll simply use different rationalizations.
After we eliminate religion, I think we should go after nationalism next. That will be a big one so we should probably take a breather and eliminate sports team affiliations before we start on class and ideological divides. I think we should put off gender and race until we’re united on all these other things.
You can keep religion so long as you get rid of those who claim they have the exclusive truth, and feel everyone else had better line up. Ancient religions with tribal gods (even Greek and Roman ones) were a lot more tolerant than Christianity and Islam.
Imagine how much better the world would be if the religions who think SSM is an affront to their god don’t have problems when those not in their religion do it.
It is possible. Orthodox Jews don’t run around bombing bacon factories after all.
