My brief summary of religions...

I was just killing some time on Twitter, when the following spilled out of my keyboard: “Religious strife will only end when all religions die out. Religions (considering our sinful nature) encourage us to divide, and hate, and try to destroy or subjugate others. Don’t listen to me, listen to thousands of years of history.”

Not bad, eh? Also not revolutionary thinking, but hey, it’s early.

Not all religions, just those that aren’t mine, which is the correct one.

What about monks? They’re not bothering anybody.

Well, some of them aren’t bothering anybody.

To be replaced by strife over politics, resources, and revenge.

And ethnicity, ethics, and baseball.

Soccer hooliganism will only end when all soccer/football dies out.

Imagine all the people living life in peace.

Religions don’t do those things; people who twist religions to justify their own prejudices, lust for power, or territorial rage do those things. Abolish religions, and those same people will operate the same way; they’ll simply use different rationalizations.

After we eliminate religion, I think we should go after nationalism next. That will be a big one so we should probably take a breather and eliminate sports team affiliations before we start on class and ideological divides. I think we should put off gender and race until we’re united on all these other things.

Thelonious was cool.

 Some religions, e.g. Buddhism, preach tolerance and have doctrines totally antithetical to war or strife.

Of course you can find examples of Buddhists who killed or instigated war, but did they do harm because of their religion?

“Replaced by” seems to me to implicate that we didn’t have those already!

Just remember that Humans seem to have a need to have enemies, in the absence of them, will create some.

If religion dropped out, they’d have to pick up the slack.

Not all religions believe we have a sinful nature.

It’s not religions that are the problem. People are the problem.

And they’re also the only solution.

At least the only one that doesn’t involve species extinction.

A surprisingly large percentage of societal problems can be solved by eliminating the species that the society’s members are part of.

Does the name Rasputin ring a bell?

You can keep religion so long as you get rid of those who claim they have the exclusive truth, and feel everyone else had better line up. Ancient religions with tribal gods (even Greek and Roman ones) were a lot more tolerant than Christianity and Islam.
Imagine how much better the world would be if the religions who think SSM is an affront to their god don’t have problems when those not in their religion do it.
It is possible. Orthodox Jews don’t run around bombing bacon factories after all.
