We have a 3 year old indoor/outdoor cat that has been acting a bit strange lately. She had always been very active, jumping from tree to tree, chasing squirrels, etc. The last few weeks she has planted herself in the porch (screened in with a kitty door) and doesn’t do much of anything. She appears healthy, no signs of injury. However my wife and I noticed her eyes seem different. They appear to always be dilated with a very small pupil.
Thinking she might have a vision problem we tried an experiment. I took my hand and moved it rapidly towards her face. To our surprise she didn’t react at all. Very unusual. So, we’re confused. Yes, we’ll take her to the vet as soon as we can get an appointment, but does anyone here have any suggestions? Yes, I know YANAV (or maybe you are). Thanks!
The behavior part in and of itself doesn’t seem that strange for a cat. I had a cat that was normally very active but would get into ‘moods’ where it just sit around and do nothing for long periods of time, even if there were opportunities to do something fun and interesting around the house.
As far as the eye thing goes, yes, a visit to the vet is certainly called for. Your cat really isn’t that old, so I don’t think it’s an age-related problem. It could be a brain-related issue or the cat could have ingested something that is affecting its brain or nervous system.
When I had my cat we had an emergency vet service that was open 24/7 and took walk-ins. If you have such a thing near you I would consider getting your cat over there ASAP. It will likely cost you more than your regular vet, but if it’s a poison or something neurological going on you would want to get it addressed quickly I would think,
