You know how a cat can be scared and fascinated at the same time? So they take a step forward and another sideways, two steps forward and three back, all the time crouching low and prepared to do the sproing teleport thing at any moment. I once came across my Camberkitty doing this at … a box of dates.
Bailey the WonderKitty is afraid of shelves, floors, plastic bags, cat food, people, chairs, books, fans, the bed…
You see, all of them may have moved. He’ll approach the computer nervously, sniff it, and then jump when it fails to do anything. Actually, it’s not scared so much as perpetually nervous. Aagh! A thing! That does stuff!
He was walking through the living room earlier, and I was reading on the couch. I turned a page, and he fell over from fright. I didn’t think it was possible- cat getting so scared it trips on a hardwood floor and falls over?
Brat (our cat) is afraid of ceiling fans and strangers. The only ones allowed to touch her are me, my wife and stepson, she’ll hiss and bite anyone else.
Julia (my parents’ cat who is staying with us) is afraid of wet wipes. A few days ago, she got something on her. My wife tried to wipe it off with a wet wipe. We’re not sure if she didn’t like the smell or the feel but it freaked her out and now she runs every time the container is opened.
Nomination for non-cat fraidy cat…
Jasmine the dog. She’s afraid of the vacuum and the steam-cleaner. She’s also afraid of Mac the cockatiel. Whenever we take him out of the cage, she bolts for the bedroom.
Our Othello, in addition to most of the usual cat phobias (strangers, vacuum cleaners, etc) has a couple of strange ones. He’s scared to death of the ironing board. We bring out the board, he goes into hiding.
And he’s pretty much my cat, but Mrs. Zoog can play with him, he’ll sit in her lap occasionally. But there ain’t no way in hell that he’ll have anything to do with her if we’re laying in the bed. He’ll curl up next to me on my side of the bed. She reaches for him, he’s a long gone kitty…
