- This semester at the local college I am attending, there is a fairly large rumor that they have started logging passwords, ostensibly to help control internet useage. Several instructors I have say they have heard it, but the college board isn’t saying either way. It is known that they run a keyword/blacklist to try to signal improper sites, but so far I haven’t heard of anyone getting in trouble for visiting whatever they wanted, just asked not to visit particular sites (but I am just now starting to ask)… -the techs who would really know aren’t speaking about the subject at all.

-I should point out that the semester began several weeks ago, and this likely has nothing to do with recent events.

- Do any colleges admit to logging passwords? - MC
If anybody says they’re gathering passwords so they can monitor your Internet access, they’re either lying or incompetent. They don’t need your password to track your useage; every HTML request that goes through their server gets logged to a file, and they get a list of every single thing you look at. They can block IP’s and file names, flag stuff to alert them as to what you’re looking at and where you’re going, all without knowing a single password.
Granted, if it’s one of a dozen computers in the library, they can’t necessarily tell WHO is sitting at the keyboard, unless you all have individual logons.
