My company might be moving to Canada?????

Oh my gosh, so did I!! Bahahahaha

The American election results have made me want to go give Trudeau a huge hug.

I wonder which law this is? The stereotype is that Republicans favor a business-friendly climate.

It’s in Abbotsford. Looks like west of Vancouver.

I dunno, it wasn’t what I expected. I think the deal is its going to significantly delay primary investor that’s ready to go, but the investors in Canada won’t delay and would cover the costs.

Essentially we make widgets that are used by other companies. I found a way to make the widget for .80 to 1.30 where the companies that make the widget themselves costs about 18.00 each. I/we have a patent on the widget making process. We attach to other companies that use the widget. Give a killer deal to the company we attach to, and make the widget for everyone else as well. Everyone wins and we don’t have to go through the effort of maintaining our own place.

Crash course on Americans being Canadian

Just wait until you experience your first “flashing green” traffic light…

I don’t see many of those any more. In fact haven’t seen one in ages and never really saw very many, though it may be related to where I live. A green left turn arrow is now pretty much standard for advanced green.

Some thoughts on Vancouver- I’ve never been there but I’ve read/heard about it from other Canadians. It’s the most expensive place to live in Canada but many people find it very beautiful. They put a lot of effort into keeping their harbour clean (get used to those -our words), the weather is rainy but rarely snowy, and it’s probably the most temperate part of Canada.

As said above, you likely won’t have to pay much in American taxes. My mother immigrated here for university from America and never went back. American taxes are usually very simple.

If your knowledge of Canada is from the Red-Green show then I guess you’ll learn some new things. Large cities (like Vancouver or Toronto) are very multicultural whereas smaller towns are generally white.

Canada compares its multiculturalism to America (I remember from a highschool geography textbook), while America calls itself a cultural melting pot, Canada calls itself a cultural mosaic- we don’t try to force anyone to be Canadian [white], we let them live the way they like and welcome them into the community.

Also, I hear people in Vancouver smoke a lot of pot. Not sure on that one though.

Actually an hour east of Vancouver. On the US border. You could easily commute from WA state and avoid the residence / housing complication.

I don’t know when you were in Canada, but I’ve been living here since 1968 and required to fill out US tax returns for the entire 48 years. However, you will not have to pay US tax for two reasons: Once you have lived in Canada for 18 months you can deduct up to (IIRC) $80,000 of income every year. Even for the first 18 months, they will allow you to wait for the 18 qualifying months. Second, regardless of that, the Canadian taxes you pay give a tax credit against US. I no longer have earned income, but I always figure out how much tax I would owe if I paid and the Canadian taxes are about double the US taxes. Of course, you get a lot for that. Nearly 50% of Quebec’s budget is for health care.

The real headache comes when you have Canadian bank accounts. As soon as the totals pass $100,000, they have a special form of torture called FATCA. I have always reported accurately any interest or dividends, but I get trapped by these rules created to catch the Panamanian investors (which of course, they don’t since they are secret, which mine are not).

I do know that when my son was sent to Vancouver for a week working, they were preparted to give him a working permit immediately, not realizing he was a dual citizen. But immigration might be harder.

I found out today that we will find out what’s going on with the move in March. I’m always down for an adventure and I’m patient so if it’s going to be a paperwork nightmare I could handle it totally.

Probably you guys are more used to seeing American things than we are used to seeing Canadian things. It’s pretty much like Shag said, at least it is for me. So similar, and yet so subtly different. No doubt it’s about the easiest transition from one large country to another*, but let’s jus say you guys have a bit more of the British about you than we do. The last time I was up there was with my gf who grew up in a British household, and she felt just a bit more at home there than in the US.

I haven’t been to Vancouver in decades, but when I was there it reminded me a lot of San Francisco. Great place. And the weather ain’t that bad for how far north it is.

*Canada still qualifies as a large country even if it’s nowhere near the size of the US.

Hunh, I thought it was founded by Tim Horton. Ignorance fought.

Burger King?

I live in Blaine, so if they’re hiring…

As a counter point to those looking to move to Canada post election.
http://www.cbc.ca/22minutes/videos/clips-season-24/david-suzuki-believes-trump-will-wreak-havoc-on-the-earth

The only story there is that “David Suzuki believes Trump will wreak havoc on the Earth”.

Really? More than a rapidly developing China and India that have a horrible track record for environmental concerns and represent a very significant population of the world on their own?

Why in the ever living hell would anyone claim that unless they have absolutely no idea about the scales involved? The Left has gone completely off the rails on more than a few issues. It is time to put that train back on the tracks.

Ranking of CO2 emissions per country: China 1, USA 2, the entire EU 3, India 4. USA is the second worst in the world.
Ranking of CO2 emissions per capita: USA 7, China 20, the entire EU 23, India 43. USA is far worse than the other three.

The best chance the world has in dealing with global warming is the Paris Agreement on climate change. Enough countries throughout the world signed the agreement that it became effective twelve days ago. It also entered into force for many countries, including China, India, EU and USA twelve days ago.

Trump was elected eight days ago, does not believe in global warming, and wants to “cancel the Paris Climate Agreement”. “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” “Is our country still spending money on the GLOBAL WARMING HOAX?”

I suggest that David Suzuki, a renowned geneticist for decades and our nation’s premier environmentalist, is far more qualified to speak on environmental matters than both Trump and you. Just because Trump believes in “bigly” does not mean that Suzuki, in your humble opinion, has “absolutely no idea of the scales involved.”

Just because the USA is spiralling down the toilet in its dangerous ignorance does not mean that Canada and the other signatories to the Agreement want to be flushed down with it.

A reasonable generalization is that Republican Trump, in his drive to “Make America great again” with hatred, misogyny, racism, environmental destruction et alii, is significantly to the right American Democrats, who are to the right of Canadian Conservatives, who are to the right of Canadian Liberals who are the party that is presently in power in Canada and more often than not is the party in power in Canada. Vancouver and British Columbia as a whole usually lean to the left of the rest of Canada.

If you are a leftie by American standards, you will be fine in Vancouver, but if you are a rightie by American standards, you might find Vancouver grating due to the usually subtle but occasionally direct condescension.

Aside from the fact that China is seeing the light regarding climate change and is a signatory to the agreement, the story I was passing along is the same that John Oliver has been pushing. Don’t run to Canada, stay home and fix your mess before it fucks us all over.
