My computer has insomnia.

I just recently switched to a cable modem (Time Warner).

Ever since, when I put my computer in sleep mode, it will turn itself back on in about five minutes or so.

Anybody got a fix for this?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have “wake on lan” enabled?

Thanks for the response but I don’t even know how to check that.

I have windows vista if that helps.

I am not an expert buit resolved the same problem with mine when I first got it.

It’s nothing to so with the operating system you are running…it is in the BIOS setting for your PC.

Do a reboot…then early on your will see something like “Press DEL to enter BIOS setup”…you may have to be quite fast to hit the delete key before the option disappears.

That takes you into a main menu of options that mostly you SHOULD NOT TOUCH. On mine one of the options from the main menu is “Power Management”, selecting that takes me into several “Wake on…” options, all of which I have changed to disabled. I don’t think mine specifically said “Wake on LAN”…it may have been something like “wake on ethernet event”…can’t remember and have to reboot PC to check. Anyways, from memory I am pretty sure turning all of those to disabled stopped the problem on mine.

If you panic and think you have changed something you shouldn’t have then just keep hitting ESCAPE and reply Y to “cancel without saving”.

It does sound like wake on LAN in the BIOS is enabled. Disable it.

Before you go mucking around with the BIOS, try the device manager to see if you can get the OS to control it:

Patty O’Furniture is right, but the arrow is pointing at the wrong thing. Click on the Power Management tab instead and untick “Allow this device to wake the computer” then repeat for your other network controllers.

If I may be allowed to piggy back a similar question:

What if a person on Windows 7 already has that button unchecked and sometimes his computer doesn’t sleep when it should (after 30 minutes of inactivity)? What would be causing it to stay awake? Emotional distress?

Does the screensaver kick in? There may be some program telling the computer that it is still active, even when you aren’t doing anything.
