My computer hates Internet

So I have a computer problem and thought others might have more info on it. Yes, I tried turning it off and on again.

Last Wednesday, I installed a new monitor. This isn’t likely a cause but I’m mentioning it because my problems started on the same day. I tried using the computer with my old monitor and I still had the same problems.

My computer would freeze and I’d have to restart it. When I restarted it, it would work fine for a few minutes and then freeze up.

I noticed that Windows 7 updates hadn’t installed on their own, when they usually do install on their own. I installed them and then my computer stopped freezing up.

But it still have a problem: I can browse internet just fine for 1-2 minutes and then I can’t access it anymore. Internet explorer tells me: “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” and Google Chrome tells me “No data received”.

But I am still connected to Internet. I can log on to Steam, see who is in my friends list and send messages to them. I can downllad Windows 7 updates. But I can’t use browsers.

My Network and Sharing Center says I’m already connected to Internet. I use a cable (no router) to connect to a broadband. My Internet connection works just fine on another, much less powerful, computer.

My Avast antivirus software tells me there are no viruses. Windows Defender says the same thing.

My computer is less than a year old and has ample resources.
I tried turning off the Windows 7 firewall but that didn’t help.

So, what could be the problem?

Try IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS at a command prompt.

Thanks for responding.

I tried typing both “ipconfig” and “ipconfig /flushdns” and nothing happened that I could detect. When I tried typing either, a black window with writing in it (command prompt window?) briefly appeared and then disappeared.

I’ve restarted my computer and still nothing.

Sorry for asking such a basic question, but did you type it in the “Start>Search Programs and Files” box or did you open a command prompt window (by typing “cmd” in the same “Search Programs…” box first) and then type ipconfig into the open, black, command-prompt window?

You were quite right to ask such a basic question. Thanks to both of you.
It worked for a few minutes and then it stopped working. Steam seems to work properly but both internet explorer and google chrome say the same thing they used to.
What is a dns and why does flushing it matter?

It’s the first time this happens, what could have caused it?

Flushing your DNS cache means that your computer has to re-lookup everything, instead of relying on what it thinks it knows. this helps when your DNS cache gets corrupt.

Is there anything in the Event Viewer? Click Start, Run, and type eventvwr and press Enter. We’re interested in entries with RED icons in the System and Application logs.

If browsing is getting blocked then it would seem that port 80 (http) is getting blocked somewhere. Is there a pop-up in the System Tray (bottom right corner)? Or a window hidden behind your browser? You could try disabling Windows Firewall in Control Panel, though I would be loath to do this without an intervening router.

I wonder if your ISP may be detecting that the MAC (hardware) address of your PC has changed and not like it, though it would be strange to just block browsing. This is easily fixed by buying a router - don’t forget you’ll need additional network cables - so you can plug both PCs in at the same time (you connect your PCs to the router and the router to the cable modem). Speak to your ISP about this.

In both the System log and the Application log, I found red icons with an exclamation mark. What do I do with that?

I see no pop up anywhere. When yu say “system tray”, do you mean the area near where the hour, connection and sound icons are? If so, no, nothing there right now.

This could well be important. Double-click them and see what they say. Many will likely seem like gibberish but some may make some sense. If you can, post a representative sample here.

Correct.

Quartz, thanks very much for taking the time to help me. I’ve copied and pasted what I saw in terms of error and warnings. I omitted some errors that both were repeated and didn’t seem important. I’ve included some warnings as well. I copied the errors and warnings in reverse chronological order, going from today to November 7th, the day I started having problems. Srry for posting so much but I have little idea as to what information matters and what doesn’t. The very bottom of the two lists might be what matters most as they list what happened on Day 1.

Quartz,

Before analyzing this post and answering me, please wait. I just uninstalled avast and (for the last few minutes), Internet has been working fine.

Sorry if you read this just as you’re done analyzing the message above.

I’m glad you’re working now - I suggest you download Microsoft Security Essentials to replace Avast - but this one deserves separate investigation, especially if it’s repeated.

I did see it a few times. What can I do about it?
Thanks again for the help.

Can you post the full error here? Just click on the Copy button, then paste it into a post between

tags.

You have a lot of these messages, more than I quoted. This is very likely related to your problem.

If the problems reoccur, you could try using alternate DNS servers. Google has public DNS available. They have instructions here: Get Started  |  Public DNS  |  Google for Developers

Also, it’s very important to have some kind of security software running. Either have a computer savvy friend reinstall Avast and configure it properly, or replace it with something else, maybe Microsoft Security Essentials as Quartz suggested.
