Im writing this on my iPhone. I woke this morning to find my computer BSOD’d on me. I restarted it to find it telling me that a hard disc failure is imminent and that I should back it up and replace it. It won’t start in safe mode, last good config, or normally. I can’t afford to fix it right now or buy a new one, so I guess I’m fucked.
Fuck, fuck, fuckity fuck fuck fuck.
And shit.
I’m not really asking for advice, just need to rant. I guess I’m going to be posting from this iPhone for a while.
Sounds like your hard drive probably died.
If you want to be able to keep using the computer without doing anything to fix it, you can just run Linux off a LiveCD. Do you have access to another computer or a friend that can download something and burn a CD or DVD for you?
Also, does your dead PC have a DVD burner?
Yeah, looks like the HD died. And it’s on it’s second HD. I’m probably not going to fix it. I have no experience with Linux and am not really interested in using it. I have an old desktop PC that I haven’t used in years and don’t have the monitor connected to. I’ll probably put it back together this weekend and see if I can’t get it running.
Hard drives are so cheap, though. It definitely could have been much worse. I remember thinking my hard disk was going out. It turned out to be a faulty motherboard instead. Cost me a hell of a lot more than I was planning to spend because I had to get a new cpu and ram along with the mobo.
Eh, last time my hard drive died, it cost me about $360. But that included transferring all the files from the old one to the new one. This computer’s about eight years old. I could get a new laptop for $300. Anyway, I have another computer packed away that hasn’t had much use. I’ll see if I can’t put it back together and get it back online.
OK. Finally got it booted into safe mode. I scheduled a CHKDSK/F and restarted it and it’s checking the hard drive now. So I’m going to let it do its thing and think hopeful thoughts.
Then this is the time to buy a new Hard Drive and mirror the ailing one so you can decommision the bad one before it croaks and any transfering fees would be necessary.
How big is the hard drive, anyway? 200-something GB? For less than $50 you can get a 500gb replacement at newegg. For god only knows what reason, they also have this decently rated 1.5TB drive for $50 too.
Yeah, it never did restart after that. I’m writing it off due to its age (about 8 years). I have one even older that’s hardly been used and was packed away. I got it out, pit it back together and it’s working fine. I’ve downloaded Service Pack 2 and 3, I’m updating IE to version 8 and downloading Firefox, and also need to download MSE. Don’t forget, I’m poor, so my only do-it-yourself options are free ones.
