My Dad's just had his hip replaced

Last Wednesday to be precise.
Friday: I came in to see him and he was still groggy from the general anaesthetic (Dad being Dad didn’t respond well to the first one so they had to knock him out completely) and unable to walk to the loo or sleep properly because of the pain.
Saturday: He was much less groggy but unable to walk all that well.
Sunday: He was back to normal and able to walk (with the aid of a zimmer frame) to the loos.
He should be out by the end of the week, if the physiotherapist says he can walk properly he’ll be allowed home. Still there are a lot of changes to be made. No driving for about 8 weeks and he’ll probably need to get rid of the 10 year old Volvo estate, possibly even for an automatic of some sort. All the DIY he used to do around the house will be put on hold or paid for which is a shame as he used to be quite good at it.
Wasn’t too bad all in all, I guess thats modern medicine for you.

Glad to hear he’s doing fairly well.

What’s a Zimmer Frame?
Why did your Dad get his hip replaced?

Hope your Dad’s recovery goes swiftly.

Thanks Wonko
Zimmerframe - like two walking sticks joined to form a frame to support you as you walk.
Hip was replaced due to arthritis.
The details surrounding the op’ are not good publicity for the NHS, National Health Service here in the UK. He was told initially it was mild arthritis but after it got much worse we went cross border to the Irish Republic and were told it was far from mild :frowning: We were glad to get pushed up the waiting lists due to a cancellation but another set back came after the preop checkup. He was told at most two months after his checkup he would be going into surgery but two months came and went. He phoned his doctor and found out that he had a strain of antibiotic resistant bacteria in his body that would prevent his surgical incisions from healing and could kill him  This info and the drugs to treat him were waiting for at least a month with his doctor. Some heated phone calls later everything was sorted out but it was annoying to have to wait so long when Dad was in such discomfort, especially when he had just retired in the summer and was waiting to go jobseeking again. Still, everything is sorted out now.

He got out this evening and after a few weeks he should be almost totally recovered. It will be a relief.
