I agree. And it’s weird how some people think that kids have no taste at all. I remember going to a few movies as a kid and thinking they were terrible and wishing I wasn’t there. Super Mario Brothers was one. I don’t remember why I saw it, if it was something I wanted to see or was dragged along with other people, but I remember how horrifically terrible it was. I would have been grateful if someone had pointed out the critics didn’t like it and maybe another movie would be more fun.
Also, it’s not like the only the Oscar bait movies that are liked by critics. Fast and Furious 6 got a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and I don’t think anyone is going to confuse that with Citizen Kane. Good critics try to rate a movie for what it is and what it’s trying to be, not just on it’s artiness.
Sounds like a fun birthday weekend for her. If you do end up going to see RIPD, come back and update us on what y’all thought.
I would happily “pay”, except that while this is a good example of critical consensus changing…it has nothing to do with the practice of pre-screening for critics, which is what I was betting.
My bet really meant: since the practice of pre-screening new releases for critics was established (whenever that was), there has never been a film withheld from critics by the studio that turned out to be any good (much less great).
I was replying to Chronos. You were collateral damage. Sorry it didn’t meet your expectations for replies.
I’ve seen RIPD and it’s not the flop it’s reported to be. I don’t think it’s a remake of MIB other than it’s a buddy movie. The plot is more Ghostbusters. As far as acting/plot it’s a typical summer movie. A ten year old who hasn’t been exposed to three hundred similar movies/tv shows would be amused.
BTW I’ve done my duty. I’ve taken successive generations of godchildren to many, many children’s movies over the years, including in 1977 to “Raggedy Ann and AndY: A Musical Adventure”. I don’t think anyone can top that sacrifice.
