My dog is sick . . . Is Michelle still around?

I’m so worried about her. She started throwing up the day before yesterday-- this yellow foamy substance. I checked my dog book, and it recommended taking away the dog’s food and water for 24 hours. I tried that. She seemed okay yesterday; just as perky as ever. She threw up once or twice, but as soon as she was done, she wanted to play again. This morning she threw up again, and now I’m REALLY worried. She shouldn’t be sick this long. I called the vet, and they recommended bringing her in today-- which is scary in of itself.

What I’m most worried about is that she might have eaten something that poisoned her. She dug in a bag of trash about a week ago, and ate some of it. I’ve been watching when she goes outside and she doesn’t seem to have diarreah, so that’s one thing that makes me feel a little better.

My dog is my child, and I love her very much. I’m just so afraid that something is seriously wrong. Should I be so worried? I guess what I’m hoping for is that one of you guys will say “Oh, she’ll be fine . . . my dog had the same thing,” etc. Am I overreacting?

Michelle is Michi these days. But I’d say it’s wise to get that dog to the Vet’s really quick!

Take her to the vet; there’s really nothing we can say without examining her. Hope she’s OK, let us know!

The “my dog is my child” feeling is understandable, but bound to lead to disaster: we are SUPPOSED to outlive our pets. Sooner or later, they WILL get sick and die, and that’s something everyone who gets a pet has to be willing and able to cope with.

She could have chewed up something that gave her an intestinal blockage, a symptom of that is throwing up a lot. You never know. VET is the answer.

A vomiting dog can dehydrate very quick especially a small one .
Get to the vet fast and think about getting some fluid into her.Urgent!

I’ve had two dogs end up with foreign objects in their bowels, blocking them up badly.

In both cases, vomiting was very present. I advise you to contact the veterinarian IMMEDIATELY, as it can be life threatening.

They will perform X-rays, check for abdominal tenderness, and ask you a thousand questions. The bill might be around $250 just for the examination and x-rays.

One of the two dogs had to have surgery to remove 6 inches of her intestines. It was a life or death situation.

I highly stress to you that you should seek medical attention for your dog as soon as possible. It might be nothing, but if it is an obstruction, she could very easily die.

Dear God, now I’m even MORE worried!

I’m taking her in today at three. I’ll keep you guys posted.

Okay Lissa, take a deep breath. Remember, worrying does nothing to change the situation except make you more stressed. Remember we’re thinking about you…

What’s your dog’s name? What kind of dog is she? I wanna send some good vibes her way. I’ll tell my girl to think about her too. Here she is: http://133.205.10.28/~y-kiku/inuternet/crease/ecrease.htm

Lisa,

My puppy is now 11 months old. For the first several months she puked all the time. Usually for various reasons. It turns out, she just has a sensitive stomach. Too much excitement, water is too cold, she ate some wierd thing outside, carsick…it all makes her sick. Up it comes, then she looks at me as if to say “What? I feel all better now.”

She is my furbaby too, and I was at the vet many times at first, to see if she was some kind of sick. He suggested that I feed her in a free-feed method, so that food is always in her bowl and she doesn’t rush to eat, or gulp it all down at once.

For the most part, she is better now, but occasionally it still happens. Yesterday we were out walking and she got all excited seeing the neighbors, and then puked right next to my feet. Yay.

Anyhoo, the yellow foamy stuff sounds like bile to me. Do check with the vet and let us know how your puppy does.

Lissa, what did the vet say?

Canthearya, your dog is absolutely adorable! She looks like a toy!

She’s all right!

I took her to the vet, and he said that it was just a gastric upset . . . probably from her trash-can caper. He said that the fact that she would vomit and immediately feel frisky again was a good sign. If she were really ill, she would be lethargic. He told me that if I was ever worried to feel her abdomen. If it was soft and squishy and she was acting normally, it was probably just something she ate, and give her some Pepto, but if it was hard, or she cried when I touched it, then I should seek care immediately. He gave me a prescription to calm her tummy with extra pills in case she ever gets sick again.

My God, I am so relieved!

That’s good. Really good!

When my dog had that problem, I thanked god that I got pet medical insurance. a $500.00 bill ended up costing me only about $175.00.

With my dog, I act first, and think later. She is my best friend, and I couldn’t stand to lose her

Glad to hear it Lisa!

Give puppy hugs from us too.

Glad to see the news.

Takes a while to work out the individual foibles of each dog, some throw up on things that other dogs seem to be ok about and others can eat virtually rotten smelly meat and still be alright. I’ve seen one dog that can eat anything except fried stuff and milk, something to do with the fat.

Lissa I’m so glad she’s okay! But you didn’t tell us her name or her breed! C’mon, I’m dying to know.

evilbeth, thanks for the compliment on my babydog, also known as Princess FuzzyButt. Can’t wait to get offa work, go home and give her kisses!

I know the last thing you need right now is more stress, and it’s even worse when it’s your ‘baby’ that’s sick. It’s a relief to know it was nothing serious.

::subliminal message:: don’t smoke :slight_smile:

Canthearya,

She’s a three year-old Norweigan Elkhoud-Golden Retriever mix . . . which is a delightful combination. She is cream-colored with a narrow head and enormous brown eyes, and her tail curls up over her back charmingly. She’s a big dog, about sixty pounds, but still thinks she’s a puppy, and ties to crawl up on my lap accordingly when she isn’t feeling well. She has a sweet, loving personality and is very playful and very intelligent-- so much that it startles me sometimes. I’ve had her since she was a tiny ball of cream-colored fluff. Her name is Frances Bean, but everyone calls her “The Bean.”

She really is the world’s greatest dog, at least to me. She’s my baby, my angel-- even when she’s being a little stinker. I had her trained at a police-dog school, so she’s very obediant (when she feels like it!) And she knows a lot of cute tricks. If you point your fingers at her like a gun, and say “Bang!” she’ll fall over dramatically, and throw her feet up into the air. She’ll sit with a treat balanced on her nose until you say “Eat it!” Being such a large dog, she is almost as tall as I am, and she loves to “dance” by placing her front paws on my shoulders. She’s oddly cat-like. She rubbs against your legs, and will bat around her toys just like a cat. If one gets stuck under the furniture, she’ll reach her arm under and scoop it out. She also has this odd thing she does, and we’ve never figured out why. Ocassionally, she’ll bring us presents. . . she goes into the laundry basket, and will carry a sock downstairs and place it in its owner’s lap. Go figure.

Sorry I’m going on and on about her. I just think she’s the greatest, and I’m SO glad that there’s nothing wrong with her. Thanks, guys, for sending the good thoughts my way. I really appreciate it, and so does The Bean.
