My DVD Buying Addiction

bump

Any thread that can practically force me to purchase 3 DVD’s needs to be on the first page!

So, 5+3=8! As soon as they arrive, I’ll have 8 DVD’s!

Previously owned:
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Spaceballs
Gladiator
The Secret of NIMH
Monty Python - Holy Grail

New purchases:
Perfect Blue
Dogma
Chasing Amy

And no, none of them are going to be a part of my white elephant.

Yeah, I noticed that about 5 minutes after I posted. I got the special edition, and damn, those extra minutes at the beginning improve the movie.

A warning to Canadian Dopers: The Canadian DVD release of MEMENTO doesn’t include the extras on the US version. Look for the Columbia Tri-Star version, not the Alliance Atlantis version.

Do you mean the trailers on the Memento DVD? Cuz regardless of getting the US version, that’s the only extra that’s on there. Though, I’ve heard about a special edition, with many extras, coming out as early as next year.

Wumpus is right about the Columbia Tri-Star version. There are the above mentioned trailers, a detailed close-up gallery of the conceptual artwork for the tatoos and the tatoos themselves, an interactive version of the flash website (the newspaper), the original short story, and an interview with the director. There are hidden features if you know where to look. And the scene selections screen is really cool.

Pi has arrived at my doorstep today. When I tell my friends I have it, they’ll think I’m talking about pie of the american variety, unfortunately.

That brings my collection up to a grand total of 10,213. Err, better make that 14.

Ah, sorry, my mistake. I didn’t know about the hidden features and had only read about the features on the American release (Canadian, here). The only features that I’ve seen advertised for the Columbia Tri-Star version are the trailers. Since I’d read many DVD sites complain about how barebones it was, I just assumed the US version was the same as the Canadian.
Again, sorry.

I rarely buy DVDs of movies I’ve never seen, The Wicker Man was an exception, mainly because I’ve been reading about it since 1975 and never had a chance to see it. The money was well spent.

My name is Ross and I own no DVDs. Not a sausage.
This is the complete opposite of VHS tapes. Over the years, what with damage, losing them, et al, I shudder to think how many I’ve bought since my first one: The Young Ones: Oil, Boring and Flood, way back in 1989.

I only rent DVDs though. I’m loathe to buy one, because it’d be the start of a landslide. The only ones I’d consider are Bob Roberts, Far Away So Close!, and maybe the Godfather trilogy and Clerks, neither of which I’ve seen.

I’ve developed 2 very dangerous obsessions: DVD collecting and eBaying. We have around 800 DVDs and the majority of them were bought on eBay. In hundreds of transactions, I can count the problems I’ve had on one hand. Most of the DVDs I buy are new and sealed and I’m a regular at many online eBay stores. It’s pretty fun and going to the Post Office is like Christmas morning every visit!

I still buy DVDs in regular stores though. Yesterday I bought Blow Out, the Special Edition of Carrie, sex, lies & videotape, Bagdad Cafe, and Wild Child (all $14.99 except s,l&v, which was $10.99), at Tower.

The number of DVDs I have isn’t the point for me in my collecting. It’s a library. For me it’s all about the movies themselves, a dream-come-true that I can just pull a title off the shelf any time I want to see a movie in whole or part. I owned quite a few VHS (and Beta) tapes, but the majority weren’t widescreen and they take up an awful amount of space. Laserdiscs are usually widescreen and have extras, but until recently they were so hideously expensive that collecting titles was never an option. Now LDs are cheap, so I’ve bought a few titles that aren’t on DVD yet, but DVDs rule my heart. I don’t care that I’ll “never be able to watch them all” because a title will be there when I DO want to watch it. That’s the point of a library, after all.

I can get so many DVDs at such good prices that I can experiment and buy films I haven’t seen (or in some cases, heard of), something I never did with VHS. I’ll see a listing and look up the comments at the IMDB and/or search the web for reviews. If it sounds interesting and unique in some way, I’ll get it. I’ve had amazing luck and discovered films I wouldn’t have seen otherwise.

The fact that DVDs can have lots of extras is icing, and if given a choice I will choose the one with all the bells and whistles, but just having a film in widescreen is better than not. I’m replacing all my icky clunky pan & scan tapes, and soon the pre-recorded VHS shelves will only contain those favorite films that have not yet been released on DVD.

A never-want-to-recover DVDaholic,

I just got this DVD! It rules most highly!
I recommend it to anyone into B Horror flicks.
I picked up Nightbreed at the same time.
So many DVDs… so little time… and $$$.

My collection is here.

I absolutely can NOT wait for the Skinny Puppy Video
Anthology
! I feel like a little schoolgirl about to
see N’sync or something. I’m giddy! Next month it’s
going to be Ain’t it Dead Yet?, and i’m hoping
In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up (Live)
is released soon.
Ok. i’ll stop now.
