My first decorated cake, and I think it works!

Nice job! BTW, are we related? The reason I ask is that the picture of the cut cake has lots of beer and booze in the background, and my mother would always complain that every family photo we took made us look like we lived in a tavern.

I used to make carrot cakes in Germany (they had never heard of them there) and for special friends, I would do erotic cakes and other shapes and use wild colors to decorate them.

My trick to getting the icing smooth? Use a flat, wide knife - have a glass of ice water - and get that knife really wet, cold and clean after each final swipe around the cake. The water will dry off, but it helps smooth out the rough edges and you quickly learn how to make it smooth and almost polished.

A few toasted, slivered almonds might have looked like sesame seeds on top of that bun/cake…

Take the Wilton classes. You’ll LOVE them! You’ll need to bring a new cake to EACH class, and of course you’ll have to buy the tools (which is why the CLASS ITSELF is relatively inexpensive), but the skills you’ll acquire will be everlasting!

Re: smooth icing–yes, put on the crumb coat, then pile on the next coat of icing, and dip your spatula in a glass of water. The little bit of water helps to even everything out!

One of the coolest cakes I ever made was a bedpan.

Oh, and I used to have a boobie cake pan, a tushie cake pan, and one that was…ahem I think it was called “Peter Proud.”

Yes. We are related. Most pictures of me involve beer.
To be fair, that shot was done at the new years party. It would have been a crime to NOT have alcohol there.

I’d be scared to use a wet spatula..but I’ll trust you. I’ll try it.
I used rice krispies for sesame seeds. I don’t like the mix of nuts and cake, for some reason.

Again, with the water! Ok. I’ll do it.
I actually did try a boobie cake once - a friend of mine turned thirty, and was having a “dirty thirty” party. She was rather petite, and asked me to make a cake boobie cake for her as a joke. It didn’t come out nearly as well as this did..so I don’t count it.

For the classes..I don’t mind buying the tools. After all..I’ll need them to decorate with anyway, right?

What, no onion slice. Bad parrot head, bad!

Great looking cake though, I agree about the fondant for decoration only, it really doesn’t add to the taste so better to have it just where it’s visible.

I know..I need a class on making onion slices. Or something. :frowning:
In my defense…um. No defense. sigh

I also wanted to make palm trees for Paradise..and didn’t get around to it.
