My first night shift

Almost there… just a few hours left…

Thank goodness for the Straight Dope and for different time zones (and insomniacs). There’s no way I’d make it, otherwise. It’s so quiet in the lab tonight, I probably could have slept a while, but it’s still too new to me. The sounds are unfamiliar and the benches are uncomfortable.

Maybe I’ll bring a pillow tomorrow night!

I worked nights for most of my 40 years as a nurse. It’s 2:30 am here. Old habits die hard.
Some people adapt easily, some never do.
I tried working day shift a number of times over the years. The longest I lasted was 3 years in dialysis.
I remember one woman I worked with who would wistfully look out the window in the darkest hours, and talk to the sleeping world, wishing they would take her back home.
Welcome to Other Earth.

I think I’m the second kind.

I’m actually trembling from exhaustion. Of course, it’s the first day out of seven, so I’ll give my body a chance to adjust. Still, I am really, really missing my pillow right about now!

Almost 6am. Two hours to go. I’ve only gotten three specimens all night, which is hardly enough to keep me alert. guess I should be thankful there are no bleeders, though. A slow night is always better than a crazy one, esecially since I’m alone.

What confuses me is how some people actually prefer night shifts. Insanity, I tell you!
