Well, we don’t mind a bit, especially if it helps.

That feels a bit better…
I am sorry, my best wishes to your son.
Update time.
Just got off the phone with my ex - it looks like Riley might be having some liver problems. It is entirely possible that this is caused by a reaction to the blood he was transfused with yesterday - they pumped him up full, and this morning, he had quite a bit of blood in his urine. When they went in to get his chemo done today, his eyes were quite yellow, and sure enough, labs show his enzyme levels are fairly elevated.
For now, the docs want to ride it out. They plan to test him again on Thursday, and if his enzyme levels haven’t decreased, then it is likely that they are going to have to switch up some meds. The likely culprit, in this case, would be his oral medication. Unfortunately, they won’t know for sure how long it will take to get him back to treatable levels if this is the case - there is just no way of knowing at this point. They are also concerned that his hemoglobin levels may crash again.
Best case scenario, though, is that its just a reaction to all that blood (it had been some time since he needed such a heavy transfusion), and that his levels will drop below “concern” levels by Thursday.
Just want to keep y’all updated.
I will hold Riley in my thoughts this week and wish you both the best.
I will be thinking about you and Riley.
hugs Prayers going up for him tonight
Poor kid - I hope the doctors are right and it’s just a reaction to the transfusion. Leukemia’s a bitch, but he’s lucky to have a treatable kind and that it seems to have been caught early. I hope he keeps on getting better!
My best friend had leukemia (CML) as a teenager (which is rare at that age) and not only beat it, she’s gone on to become one of the best oncology/hematology nurses ever (IMHO, of course). She doesn’t work in a children’s ward, but gets the odd kid through her ward and she tells me how amazing it is to see them fight these diseases; little kids can be so brave and strong. I’m sure your Riley is just like that.
Remember to take care of yourselves too. Even just 5 minutes to refocus on your own needs can make a lot of difference in your ability to help Riley and his siblings go through this.
All the best. How old is the little guy again?
Good thoughts going out to you folks from the wilds of WV.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma society has good supports. If anybody has some extra money lying around, it’s a great charity. Our “Honored Teamate” of our fundrasing group is a little guy named Tyler and he was running rings around us on Saturday - about 5 years since his diagnosis.
Best thoughts for all of you.
I’m just now seeing this thread. I am sorry you are having to go through all this. I hope you are well connected to families who are familiar with leukemia. Thank you for sharing with us … the Dope is a great community when the chips are down. Big hugs to you and Riley.
I’m not very good at offering emotional support, but I will relate an anecdote. My older sister was diagnosed with leukemia when she was five and again when she was nine. Each time she was given only a few months to live. She is now in her late thirties, married and is a professional working in her childhood dream job. Don’t give up hope
Thanks again all for your continued support - it helps so much! Just a quick update (at the tail end of lunch at work, so I don’t have long):
GREAT NEWS! It was just a reaction to the blood - Riley’s levels that are supposed to be higher have stayed higher, the ones that needed to be lower have gotten lower, and the jaundice has started to fade. This is the best possible outcome, and a HUGE relief!
Citizen, Riley is 5.
Thanks again to all who have shared their personal experiences (or those of people you are close to) - it really does help to keep my hope up.
Thank you, thank you, a million times thank you!
I’m very glad to hear you and Riley are past that crisis, Woeg.
Woeg, I just found this thread and have spent the last hour or so catching up. You are a really strong, really brave man and I am filled with admiration for your perseverance in the face of all this stuff you’ve had going on. As a self-care professional, I hope you’re finding some time here and there to take care of you. Massage, exercise, goin’ fishin’ … whatever helps you recharge and replenish. It sounds like you’re being the rock to an awful lot of people and I hope that rock stays well.
Much love,
Leslie
I’m happy about the good news. Hoping the rest of this thing goes quickly and smoothly for him and for you- thanks for keeping us updated.
Keep up the good fight, Riley! We’re all pulling for you.
Go Riley! I’m so glad for some good news, Woeg.
