My Freezer is Freezing and I am looking for advice

I have a rather cheap model refridgerator-freezer. It’s one of those typical models with the freezer on top, the fridge on the bottom. In the past few weeks I have been having an issue where the back of my freezer frosts over and a rattling noice from what sounds like the compressor starts occurring. When this happens I defrost the freezer and it’s okay for a couple of days and then it starts again. The rattling is definitely not something in the freezer getting shaken; I have removed everything I could and grabbed the only things that could rattle and it didn’t affect the noise.

Now one person’s unprofessional opinion is that the whole thing is shot and since it’s a peice of crap refridgerator we might as well replace it with a new one. (This person has also painted the kitchen two different colors in three weeks so I suspect sabotage in an attempt to get a matching appliance.) I suspect the issue is just the seal on the door of the freezer letting moisture in (we live in Florida so it is very humid) which freezes to the back causing this.

The question for you then is what is wrong with my freezer and about how much will it cost to fix. I’m leaning toward $100 as the dividing line for switching out to a new freezer…

What is it set for?
Most fridges have variable settings.
Some have “Humid Climate” setting.
Give it the once-over.

Mine does not. It has two settings both of which are psuedo-temperture settings (though they rate the temperture in numbers and letters). I have been turning this up just in case it was too cold in my freezer but it does not appear to have had an impact.

Once again, cheap refridgerator/freezer.

How full is your freezer? The element in a relatively empty freezer has to work much harder to cool the interior. So if your freezer is like mine which usually only contains some tater tots and ice cubes, try sticking a couple gallon jugs of water in there and see if that helps.

Thank you for that idea. I have been leaving it mostly empty since this problem started for fear of losing too much food when I have to defrost again. I will try that and see if it has an impact.

Sounds similar to something that happened to me once.

The drain underneath and to the back of the freezer got plugged up with ice. Ice built up until it blocked the airflow in the freezer and eventually blocked the fan (making a rattling noise).

An extra long defrost and clean out made everything right again.

Now since you’ve said you’ve already tried defrosting, maybe something else is blocking that drain?
