There’s an element of this: you’re in China, criticizing the Chinese. Of course they’ll be defensive about it, whether or not what you’re saying is true.
Same applies to any country in the world. If you go there and start criticizing it to its citizens, they’re not going to like it.
Oh please. Somebody can be the subject of heavy propaganda and/or indoctrination and it has nothing to do with their intelligence. Anecdote =/= evidence, yada yada I know, but I speak from experience. An ex-GF of mine was a wickedly smart computer programmer, but she wouldn’t tolerate any negativity towards China. I just learned to not talk about China past, say, the 1700s, and we broke up before it became a big issue. How China Guy lives with it is beyond me.

Okay, the comment that she was a dumbass may or may not apply–I don’t know the girl. But of all the adults I’ve met who are still 100% indoctrinated with the bullshit they were fed in childhood (patriotism, religion, ideas like “abstinence-only sex education is good”), the one thing they’ve had in common is intellectual incuriosity.
The advice to avoid political conversations is still spot-on. OP really shouldn’t be needling his girlfriend, because he knows how she’s going to respond and he knows that it irritates/upsets her. Either be the bigger person and stop bringing it up, or find a girlfriend who isn’t gung-ho about the old republic.
