There is a possibility that giant toxic clouds of burning and pain and not getting the oxygen into your lungs are going to drift across this here fair city of Baltimore. The firey train of suffocation in question seems to be located, oh, approximately underneath my apartment building. I am going to bed for it is in my best interest to be unconcious when the hydrocloric acid hits.
A very good friend of mine lives RIGHT THERE near the stadium. I hope she’s OK.
sugaree, I hope you’re OK, too.
What a clusterfuck.
Zette
Damn. I agree. That’s a clusterfuck.
Hope you’re okay.
Death? You think death is bad? I took Osip to dinner tonight. I was going to goto Federal Hill, but that was blocked off, charles street corrodor seemed to be out too, so we went to John Stevens in Fells Point. After dinner, my thought is “well, it’s prolly cleaned up”, so I take Fleet St. to President St, but everything westbound is closed. Fine, take 83 N to North ave, accidentally make a loop North to Calvert to 29th, cross back over 83, skirt Druid Hill Park, pick up Reisterstown Rd north, cut west on Northern Parkway, take Liberty Rd west to 695, 695 to 95, catch Caton Ave and deliver him to his hotel after having seen a lot more of Baltimore than he planned. 1 1/4 hours for what should have been a 20 minute trip. It’s a damn good thing I know this city like the back of my hand.
Can any of you guys who live there tell me what the situation is now? I’m really worried and she isn’t answering her phone (she probably got out and went someplace safe). Is it dangerous? Are people sick? Did they make a huge deal out of nothing?
Any info you have would be great.
Thanks,
Zette
FTR, Dept of the Envirnment just announced air tests show no chemical fumes or contamination, all major arteries into B-more are now open again. She’s fine, I’m sure Zette. Oh, and Osip, Thx for dinner!
Hey Osip! Time for a new sig!
Sugaree, WTF??? I have been at a convention all week RIGHT in YOUR Neibourhood!!! You were warned to leave town LONG ago. Well this morning bright and early things seem to be a bit better under control. Still a big mess, but strrets are open. Maybe, just MAYBE the air quality will be good enough this evening for Nacho4Sara to come out and play.
WeirdDave, Was a great deal if fun seeing all the slums of this fine city. I must say the DO have a great deal of charm. North street Lower whatever we drove thru as well.
Nothing like slumming in a strange big city with a total stranger to boredom.
Sue Yeah that would make a good Sig line, maybe not for me, but I am sure Dave would enjoy it Although I do not see why he would complain about dinner, He picked the place, I paid, and I behaved myself.
All in all a very …errr Interesting time wednesday evening.
Osip
No we weren’t. We were told to stay indoors and keep our windows shut. As for the air-raid sirens (fired up for the first and only time since they were installed 50 years ago), I did not hear them from inside a hermatically sealed office. All I noticed on my walk home from the Harbor was that traffic was a bit crazier than usual. Found out about the fire when I turned on the tube around 8. From the looks of people in Mt. Vernon (south of the delightfully decrepit North Ave, which is not your normal tourist hangout) hanging out on their stoops and strolling along the sidewalks, not everyone even knew. Here’s the update, and no injuries except for firefighters, so Zette’s friend must be all right. The air is not testing positive for any of the soup of chemicals that are still down there, so so far so good- just a long long cleanup ahead. God bless them firefighters- imagine trudging into that tunnel, no visibility, 30-40 minutes worth of air, tied together with rope so as not to lose anyone. Fucking heroes of the day.
Sugaree, it sounds like you ran into the same problem with air-raid sirens we had here in the Twin Cities a few years ago. They set them off when straight-line wind storms were due to hit, and people who were at home, asleep in their beds, ended up getting pissed off that they didn’t hear them. Turns out they call them air-raid sirens for a reason: they were intended to let people OUTSIDE know that something was coming, and that maybe going INSIDE would help survive the nuclear blast.
A-fucking-men. I meet any of those guys in a bar, their money is no good at all.
ah sugar, I ment you were warned I was going to be in Baltimore and had ample time to get out of town. It seems all my travels are destined to be interesting.
Remember the Bombings in Moscow and St Petersburg… yep I was on vacation there at the time.
Seems all my vacations have a black cloud (pun intended) following me.
sigh Glad it is nothing serious health wise for anyone. I have been very impressed with the speed and dedication the city officials, Firefighters, Dept of transportation and the enviromental folks have shown in regards to this situation.
Osip
Ah, I see…it is all Osip’s fault. That should disappoint the good folks over at freerepublic.com (damn Guinistasia for ever bringing it up on the Straight Dope, thus leading me to spend wasted hours reading it in horror). A few freepers have speculated that it was a terrorist attack.
Yes, I guess it is my fault in some strange cosmic way.
A terrorist attack please…
Anyway, your lovely city will return to normal sunday as that is the day I leave.
which of course still gives you time to visit with me and sign some of the railroad stakes I collected for keepsakes of my visit
