My home computer network crashes when I play Civ4 team v team...

The title was meant to be specific, but just to amplify…

I’m playing Civ 4 Warlords on two computers in a home network.
The following work fine:

  • single player games
  • multiplayer games where everyone is on a separate team
  • multiplayer games where two humans play on a team against several computers

However the only time I’ve tried playing a two human team v a two computer team, the game continually crashed when the two teams first met.

Anyone else experience this?
Any advice? (I don’t know of a Warlords patch being out yet)

I can’t imagine a better place to look for help!

Yes indeed.
I was being rather lazy and seeing if the SDMB would cope…

Ah, Civ4. A near-perfect illustration of the karmic principle that great joy has to be counterbalanced by great suffering. And with Vietcong 2, strong evidence that Take2 Interactive won’t let QA get in the way of a release date.

Civfanatics.com tells me that Mehmed of the Ottomans can cause a crash with certain video cards.

He was indeed one of the computer opponents in the game, so I think the problem has been identified.

Apparently a Warlords patch is due later this month…

I’ve never experienced a piece of software more bug-ridden than Civ4.

:dubious: As compared to what? WordPad?

I’ve played about 1000 hours of Civ4 and Civ4 Warlords.

I’ve had to reload a saved (usually an autosaved) game a few times, but the above is my first real problem.

Perhaps there’s something incompatible between your computer and Civ4?

If you have a look through the user forums, there are good number of problems with Civ4 - many related to the graphics, which are actually quite demanding for what is basically a top-down strategy game. And it does have a number of random quirks. I installed it, but it absolutely refused to start. Many reinstalls and much research later, I came across a solution - create a separate user account for Civ4. Now, it works flawlessly, provided I log into my special Civ4 account. This is not usual behaviour for well-designed and tested software.

I post at Civ Fanatics. I agree with the previous posters that Warlords is really, really quirky. Addictive as well of course.

But even after updating video cards etc I normally have to save and restart to get some realistic game speed. A patch is well and truly overdue.

Elite2?

Elite- how I used to love that game- how many hours I wasted. Thanks for the memories. I think.

I wasted a few on Elite 2 till I got sick of the crappy combat and the autopilot that happily flew you straight through a planet

Mehmed II crash fix patch

Another reason I’m not going to buy Civ IV until they release a “Complete” version.
