My HP Printer Thinks it Has a Paper Jam

My HP printer does that a lot too, and I know for certain there’s no paper in there. Realigning the ink cartridges seems to help. It’s an all-in-one scanner, printer and copier with the paper fed from the same place the copies come out; I think perhaps the cartridge or something gets dislodged by so much being done in such a small space, and the printer interprets that as a paper jam.

That happened to my wife’s office printer once. After trying every trick we knew we eventually “solved” the problem by buying a new printer. Wish I had a better answer for you.

Yes, that’s the model. Bad typing on my part.

I’ll try the partial reset. I’ve already accessed the info on clearing a “real” paper jam and how to clean the rollers, etc.

“Partial Reset” doesn’t work. Interestingly, I had already tried something similar, based on a web site I visited, only that site said to press 6 and # simultaneously (which was wrong).

I have a HP LaserJet P2015 that did that a while back. If I rebooted it I might get no warning light (in which case I could actually print a page or two), a different warning light, or the paper jam light. Our IT guy tried the reset routine for HPs, which made it go away for an hour or so. We finally called in the heavy guns (printer repair - this is my office printer, so I didn’t have to pay for it), and come to find out the brains of the thing was toast. They had to replace a board or chip or something at the tune of a couple hundred bucks.

I have the same model and was ready to take a sledge hammer to it for the same reason. It stopped when I took the piece off the back that has to do with the double sided printing. There was a whole sheet in there. It wasn’t wrinkled or wadded and I didn’t see it when looking in near the front tray or lifting the top. I hope this helps.

Thanks, but I’ve taken that piece off several times, and even cleaned it with distilled water like the directions say.

I’m going to fool around with it a little this weekend, and if I can’t fix it, so be it.

Sorry. I know it’s frustrating.

The ironic part is that I’ll probably end up buying another of the exact same model (assuming it’s still available). It was such a royal pain in the ass to set that bugger up, that I don’t want to have go through that again with a different model. Loading those printer drivers is just painfully slow. Maybe they make it that way on purpose.

It might be worth calling them, if it’s under warranty. They might think of something else or know of a hidden sensor somewhere. When you turn it on do the printer cartridges make a slamming noise they didn’t used to?

It’s not under warranty anymore. I bout it less than 2 years ago, but more than 1 year.

Good point about the printer cartridges, though, because that is one of the symptoms I didn’t mention. The printer cartridges seem “stuck” over to the left, and when I hit the “cancel” button, they make a funny, soft, grinding noise before I get the error message again. I put stuck in quotes, because they’re not really stuck-- I can move them pretty easily manually.

Another thought. The next time you throw your hands up in the air and walk away, unplug it. It can’t hurt, but it might help to just leave it unplugged for a few hours.

Yeah, good idea, and something I’ve done several times.

If your resume light is flashing on your HP 6940 and you can’t get it to stop, and/or blank paper keeps being run through, what I did to FIX THIS (after many, many hours of trying everything), I sprayed COMPUTER AIR through the back of the printer, making sure to let it dry first (before putting the back panel back on). THAT SOLVED the problem. Yes, your printer thinks it’s jammed, but it’s really a sensor problem. Now mind you, I was still able to print a test page and all of that…so if you can’t print a test page, then it may be something else. To print a test page on the HP 6940, hit POWER and the RED X button.

If that doesn’t work, wait three years and try something else.

Hey John, did you ever get that printer working?
