My Husband Just Got Laid Off

Oh, geeze, Avarie! That SO sucks…even more so than yesterday’s suckage. You know where I’m at, and (I think) still have my email - if you need anything, let me know. I don’t know that I can do much more than listen, but…whatever it takes.

Those bastages!!!

Well, he went in on Monday to get his final paperwork squared away. They’re actually going to pay their portion of insurance through May, which is an even bigger relief.

sigh I actually cried about it for the first time yesterday. I was always worried about how we were going to get along financially after this little one arrives (because I would prefer to stay at home after his/her arrival), and this just got to be too much.

His cousin’s wife has done some resume polishing, and a friend of mine has already given his resume to her HR director (she gets a bonus if they hire someone she recommends). We’re getting good advice from friends and family, but it’s still really tough - but only emotionally for now. I know he could get hired at a new job next Wednesday, but it’s hard to think about that. I’m just trying to figure out where we’re going to make cuts in our finances to make up for my reduced wages.

I was able to call to get a forbearance on my student loan yesterday, so that’s $68 a month. His student loans are very close to being paid off, and he’s already had a default once and a forbearance once, so he doesn’t think they’ll give him another one. I’m going to call today and ask anyway - it can’t hurt! Hubby’s car is paid off, and my payment is only $130/month (it’s used). I only have a few more months left on it anyway. The two luxuries we have at home are DirecTV with TiVo and DSL internet access. Boy o boy, I’ll hate to lose my TiVo - but I will if something doesn’t happen soon. We’ve had DSL service for something like 5 years, so I’m not too thrilled about going back to dial-up, or making frequent trips to the library (or my dad’s house).

We don’t smoke, we don’t drink, we don’t rent movies or go see them - our only other budgetary cut will be eating out. We did go out to eat last Thursday, but that was before we knew I was losing 25% of my income. We’ve eaten at home every meal since then. I take leftovers for lunch, or we do have some frozen meals. They’re a nice break from leftovers, and we buy them on sale for $2-$3 each (which is much cheaper than going out to eat).

sigh This sucks.

Keeping you in my thoughts.

My verbal offer has not yet panned out into a written offer. The man wanted me to start on the 6th of March, but now says he is getting push-back from HR and it probably won’t be until the 13th. His HR department wants him to wait until April 1st because that is the beginning of the fiscal year.

I would be content to do that, as long as they give me a written offer. Otherwise, I shall soon be forced to start looking elsewhere.

Oh, no! I’m so, so sorry…that sucks beyond belief.

I’ve been thinking good thoughts for you. As far as the unemployment - we were told my husband could get unemployment once his severance ran out - he’s still receiving severance for another 4-6 weeks, so as soon as that’s up, he’ll apply for unemployment. It could definitely be different in Indiana than in Ohio, though.

Crying is good - it helps get those emotions out - believe me, I’ve done it a fair bit, too.

E.

I was laid off a few weeks ago. I was there for 10 years so I’m getting 20 weeks of severence and the company is paying for Cobra till early July.
Since I live alone, I guess I need to get on the ball and start looking.
