So my husband got a job at asshats.com. No, that isn’t really the name of the company. But it should be. Anyway, when he signed on, his contract included several things in writing, among these being:
- health insurance starting the first day of the next calendar month after hire (ie, he gets hired on 10/15, and insurance would kick in 11/1)
- job hours being 40/week, 8:30-5:30 or 8:00-5:00, as he prefers
Now fast forward several months. No insurance. They “made a mistake” and gave him an older version of the contract. They say they meant to say no insurance for 90 days. Meanwhile, not only was this in writing, it was also told to him at the interviews and by HR. It’s the reason he accepted this job in the first place.
Also, the hours are now 7:45am- 5:30. MANDATORY. This means he now has to get up at 5am to get to work. There is no pay increase for the added time.
What can we do now? He tried to talk to his boss, and got told, essentially, “sucks to be you.” No, he cannot just quit. Yes, I have bought him a red swingline stapler.
Should he write a terse “you have breached my contract” letter to his boss, CEO, and HR? Call a lawyer (what kind)? Something else?
Obviously, we are submitting resumes elsewhere. But in the meantime, how might one resolve such a problem?
