My iPod makes this horrible noise.

My 5 gen iPod makes a horrible noise every ten minutes or so. It blares out 12 quick bursts of noise in rapid succession, actually four sets of three rapid squawks with a short pause in between each set. The backlight sometimes comes on when this happens. How do I make it stop doing this?

Have you mistaken a hen for your ipod? Yes? Simply remove the earphones from the hen and the squawking should stop.

Do you have a GSM cell phone?

Try turning that off for a while and see if your iPod still makes a noise.

I agree, sounds like interference from a cellphone. The noise you get when they check in to a base station usually sounds like “tack-a-tack tack-a-tack tack-a-tack tack-a-tack” when it’s picked up on other audio gear.

GSM signals pare in pairs of one and two, though. (Beep…beep…beepbeep…beep…beepbeep…beep…beepbeep, etc.) It’s short lived, only three or four sets of these, unless the call is heading into your cell, whereupon evolves into a steady, punctuated squelch until you answer it. I’ve never heard this happen with portable equipment though – certainly not mine, and I use my iPod every work day. I’ve only ever heard it come in on speakers that are either plugged into the wall or connected to something that is. But that may be because this interference is very directional and location-dependent. (If your cell is on a table pointed at speakers when a call is incoming or outgoing, you’ll hear it, but not if you point your cell away from the speakers.) On the off chance that this might just be a case where I’ve just never encountered it before, is your cell in the same pocket as your iPod? Or in its immediate vicinity?

Actually I do have a GSM cell phone in my car which I use as a tracking device. I tried recording the sound on my computer and the sound never occurred which would make sense since the cell phone isn’t nearby. I’ll try turning the cell phone off and see if that helps. Thanks!

Yeah, that did it. I had my cell phone off coming in to work today and no noise. You guys are really great.
