I don’t know about those others, but the Black Panthers did do quite a bit for the community. The leadership got lost.
Not to excuse some of the less noble things they did. And even most of that had reason.
I’ve had a couple run-ins with the KKK, being an ex-catholic and a nigger lover to boot. I grew up in Bakersfield. That was fun.

Isn’t Camden’s demographic about 60% black? It seems odd that someone would be so blatant in a town in which he might be a minority.
(I went to college in Magnolia, and my in-laws are all from near Fordyce. I travel through Camden every time we go to visit. My husband was offered a job there after college as a social worker, but we moved to Ft. Worth instead.)
Ok, updating myself. It didn’t take as long as I thought. It comes out to about 24 pictures. I’m probably going to do maybe 5 in an email at a time. I’m going to send them to Dudley Garrett first and if you would please let me know how well it turned out before I mail to anyone else, that’d be great.
Oops, my wording made it sound as if I was doubting your story, WomanofScorn. I didn’t mean to come off that way.
I think when I looked up the dempgraphics at one time it was like 51%, but still that’s majority. It may be more now. That’s what I mean about having the balls to just hand it to anyone. Sure my husband looks like your typical redneck, and I use the term lovingly, with his blond hair and blue eyes. Sure he drives a pick-up truck and admittedly he did have the rebel flag on his front license plate. He likes the flag though. To him it doesn’t represent the KKK it represents the South and he’s proud of it. But obviously he doesn’t support their thinking or I imagine he wouldn’t have married me. I look like a white girl, but I’m not. Does Italian classify as white? I don’t know anymore lol.
My in-laws live in Fordyce actually. His family is from Bearden I think though. Bearden, Fordyce, and some live in Hampton.
Oh I didn’t even see your reply that way. I didn’t think you doubted me.
A friend and I, both long-haired California boys, took a trip to the east coast in the early '60s via route 66 and other roads. Looking for adventure. Boy, did we find it.
Ever seen *Easy Rider]/i]? That. We were refused service more than once. Usually just ignored, sometimes threatened. Actually, we were treated best in Alabama. Gentile curiosity, mostly.
We took the northern route home. All was fine till we got to Montana. If you go there, go fast.
Hi, DiosaBellissima.

It’s awesome (well, the scan quality, the actual newspaper is garbage! Good work! Thanks again…
You can find that shit online. I’m not about to boost their count by linking to it, though.
The ACLU sued for their (the KKK’s) right to do this kind of stuff. I was behind them (the ACLU) 100% in that. It’s the same right that enables me and you to call it shit.
I do reccommend reading stuff like WomanofScorn’s newspaper. It doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. It’s not funny, but it is.
I’ve lived in redneck neighborhoods and I have lived in minority neighborhoods. Guess which I live in now.
People in Santa Cruz, CA that knew of my past life in Florida used to quiz me about Easy Rider; could that ending really happen? When I assured them it was more than possible, they would wonder how I ever survived there. I told them I survived Texas; Florida was a cinch.
My music duet partner lives in Annapolis, and used to live in a tightly-packed waterfront neighborhood.
The population was almost 100% white people, no poor, but nobody above middle-middle class. Some owned boats, but most did their own home repairs.
One Sunday, we were practicing when her high-school age son brought a flyer in that had been tossed into the yard the night before. It outlined various racial supremacy theories, and basically blamed Jews for the fact that it gets dark at night.
There were no threats, no calls to violence, etc. Standard tiptoing.
The boy thought we had to call the police. His mom is less versed in the psychology of such people than I am, and asked me to explain to her son why the best way to deal with such crap was to ignore it.
In my mostly white, middle-class neighborhood, two times over the last couple years we’ve found Christian flavored racial-purity fliers on the front porch in the morning when we get the newspaper. The amusing thing, to me anyway, is that whoever printed these one page fliers used a free “alternative” weekly from the local daily to weigh it down.
I’m sorry, what?
I’m hyperbolically saying that the flyer blamed Jews for all the world’s problems.
(I got the line from comedian Gilbert Gottfried’s description of his parents’ constant plying him with guilt).
Indeed- many okies and arkies settled in this area of the state in the 30’s, so it isn’t surprising to find similar attitudes.
Nearly everyone’s read Grapes of Wrath, I think. The story seems very familiar to anyone who grew up in the area around Bakersfield.
Yeah, since we were only forced to read it and watch the movie every. single. flippin. goddamned. year from 6th grade to 12th grade.
I’m, obviously, not the biggest Steinbeck fan.
A friend’s father was asked to join the Klan by a local businessman in a small, Mayberry-esque Canadian town. After refusing, he never heard about the group again or saw evidence of their activities. He never even found out who else was a member.
::snerk!::
Me neither, but he nailed GoW, like it was a documentary.
The KKK is in Canada?
