My KKK experience (kinda long)

A better question: Does the KKK realize that Canada is a seperate country?

Hmmmmm. I was under the impression that KKK activity stopped at about Fredericksburg, Virginia. I suppsose I’m wrong. Where else are they?

The problem with answering that is that it’s often easy to say the KKK is there, because they’re public and open about their recruiting and activities. But, with the KKK, absence of proof is not always evidence of absence. I don’t know that there is any KKK activity in my area, for example, but I do know there are plenty of racist assholes who seem to have the right mindset, including the persecution complex, that seems to go with the modern KKK.

According to Wikipedia’s KKK article, there was a house burning in Ohio in 2005, and afterwards guys in sheets showed up to distribute leaflets.

And, of course, at this point, there seem to be a great number of groups claiming to be the one true successor to the KKK, with all the factionalism that implies.

…By the early 1920s at least 3 million Americans belonged to the Invisible Empire…It had 300,000 members in Ohio, 200,000 in Pennsylvania. It seized control of state governments in Colorado and Indiana…it elected the mayors of Portland, Oregon and Portland, Maine. It recalled the governor of Oklahoma, dominated parts of California, and passed a state law in Oregon requiring Catholic children to attend public schools.

They’ll soon grow strong enough to change the country’s name to Kanada.

There is no mention of Canada, but these pages show known distribution.

The Klan hasn’t been as exclusively Southern organization since its first manifestation after the Civil War. During its second manifestation, in the early 1900s, Indiana was a hot bed. More recently, in the 1990s Springfield, Missouri had the highest per capita Klan membership in America.

I don’t know about the KKK, but I think we all know that stupidity pays no never mind to lines on a map.

Antisocial woman? I never heard that one. What did a woman have to do to be labeled antisocial?

Mention Hitler’s niece?

I would also like to see the newspaper: liirogue @ gmail.com

Perhaps it would be easier for you to host it on a free picture site, such as photobucket?

Not my KKK story but one of my favorite KKK stories.

Ahhh, the downside of free speech.

I recently had to explain to my children that free speech means free speech for everyone, even the idiots. They don’t fully comprehend the implications of that but they’re young.

I once went to a Halloween party where two people walked in wearing full Klangear; the party came to a dead halt as everyone stared. They removed their hoods to reveal that they were actually black men and I swear, everyone heaved an aubible sigh of relief and went back to talking and laughing.

When they did so, did they exclaim, “where th’ white women at?”

(It’s a movie reference, BTW.)

It’s not a KKK but it is blatant racism. A few weeks ago, I went to a get-together at the home of some people I’ve known for several years now. As the evening wore down, it came down to just the hosts, a very good friend of theirs, my fiance and me. I was stunned when they started saying some blatantly racist, bigotted things, including some nonsense about how black people have a spur on their ankles so they’re naturally better athletes. I started offering some counter-arguments, then warned them that I used to be on the Diocesan Commission on Racism and I didn’t want to hear this. They persisted and I warned them again. When the cycle had gone on too long, I walked out (not the best move – my fiance drove!).

Actually, I’ve been considering asking for advice. You see, we’re all in the same organization, so I can’t write them off completely. Earlier that evening, they’d also talked about changing the date of their next get-together so I could attend. Has anyone got a better suggestion for explaining why I’m not going other than saying, “Sorry. I don’t associate with racists.”?

Sounds like a perfect explanation to me. You could wrap it up nicer, e.g. ‘I wasn’t comfortable with the conversation’

I like Siege’s better. Call it what it is.

Nope. And you don’t need a better one.

Well…actually, lose the “sorry,” and you’ll be just fine.

I’ve been thinking about this.
Seeing how you’ve already expressed your distaste for their stupidity, just don’t go. If they ask why, express your surprise that they’d ask.
Where does your fiance stand on this incident?

In the early 90’s (what is it about that decade?) I decided to take a long weekend drive. I lived in Washington state, and had never been east of the Cascades.

So I packed a bag and drove. The second day, I entered into Idaho. Very pretty, very scenic. Needing gas, I got off the interstate in a small town whose name escapes me.

I filled up my tank and walked into the store to pay. The guy behind the counter looked like the stereotypical “Bubba” He was grinning like a fool as I handed over my money. Ok, I thought, this is kinda creepy.

“You just passin through?” He asked, still smiling like he had just won the lotto.

“Yep.” I grabbed my change.

“Ya know, we’re having this get together later today. You should come!” He reaches down and grabs a flier from behind the counter. “We have a big picnic, games, all sorts of fun. We love it when new people visit!” He pushes a piece of paper into my hand.

I glance down, and the only thing I saw was “Aryan Nation” on it. I pushed the paper back across the counter, said “No thanks.” as fast as I could, and then beat a retreat back to my car. Drove away as fast as I legally could, and headed back to civilization.

Uhgg! Did I look like a possible breeder or something?!? Yuck!

Holy Crap! I just recently moved to Bakersfield for work - had been warned to stay ‘this side of 99’ but I was completely unaware of KKK activity here.

Wow - I really truly have lead a sheltered English life I honestly thought that the organisation was no longer active or present in the US. I am floored and have had my eyes opened.
