I think this season is mostly weak, especially with a shortened season. However, some of the episodes are still very good, or even scenes/parts/songs in the weaker ones. Like Sombra was the worst villain. Snooze. That whole thing was a mess. But Too Many Pinkie Pies was amazing, it was good to see Discord again, and this one with the sidekicks was entertaining. I’m hoping it ends on a high note.
I guess S4 has been semi-confirmed, so there’s that. I hope we don’t have to wait until November.
And today on MLP’s official FB page, it looks like in this season’s finale,
[spoiler] Twilight Sparkle is going to be made both a princess and an alicorn (winged unicorn).
I’m trying to reserve judgment until I actually see it, but I’m not crazy about it. It’s been a rumor for a while, but today seems to be the confirmation.
From an “objective” standpoint that episode wasn’t great. It felt kind of fanfiction-y to me. It was definitely a “wish fulfillment” episode. Emotionally, and purely subjectively I kind of liked it for, from what I can tell, is no good reason.
I could have done without it being “My Little Pony: The Musical”, though.
When they made this episode, they probably didn’t know if they were going to get another season, as this episode puts it up to the 65 episodes needed for syndication. That’s why the episode gives off end of series vibes.
I know that. It would’ve made a pretty good book-end, I’ll admit. The plot still felt a little… thin, though. It felt like I was being wheeled from place to place just for the sake of forcing a plot. Maybe it was just because it was a musical, don’t get me wrong, I usually like their musical numbers, but this one was a bit flat and boring.
I think it would have been better with more talking like ponies working to solve a problem and less ♫ FRIENDS HELP EACH OTHER OUT ♫.
I disagree with the rest of the internet though:
I don’t mind Alicorn Twilight, the ending was heartwarming, and the Cosmic Void (ft. Celestia) was a really cool scene.
Overall, the episode was charming, I felt fuzzy the whole time I was watching it. But while feeling fuzzy I just felt like the plot was a little thin.
Finally saw the S3 finale. It certainly looks like this was written as a possible series finale before S4 was confirmed. The episode certainly hit all the right emotional notes with me, and I certainly shed some liquid pride.
A lot was crammed into 22 minutes here. The initial storyline of Twilight messing up a spell and switching everyone’s cutie marks would fill a normal episode all by itself. However, using songs to move the story line along worked well here. “What My Cutie Mark is Telling Me” and “A True, True Friend” are some of my favorite songs of the series.
Kind of wish the episode wasn’t spoiled, or that the Hub didn’t promote the episode as a Coronation Day special, since the revelation would’ve floored me if I hadn’t known. Reactions to this episode have pretty much put me off of checking out brony sites for good. I don’t know where the butthurt is coming from, as it’s been evident from the almost the first episode of the series that Celestia had big, big plans for Twilight and has been nudging her towards this day, Did anyone really think it’s a coincidence that Twilight’s Element of Harmony is a tiara while the others’ are necklaces?
Megan McCarthy, the show’s runner, said that this should be treated as the first of a three-episode storyline, but as Celestia said, we’ll just have to wait.
Yes, it’s been foreshadowed since the first few minutes of the first episode–everything about Twilight and her relationship to Celestia (and Luna) pointed that way, and had only been reinforced since. We discussed it in this very thread last April. The adult segment of the audience, at least, probably should have seen it coming for years.
My nearly-7yro son stumbled across this show and it is not his Favorite Show Evarrrr! on TV. I’ve seen quite a few episodes both on the Hub and On Demand in the past week. It’s a cute show.
Twlight is my favorite, the anxious little studious perfectionist (“a research paper! yaaaay!”), and Rainbow Dash is Boy 1’s.
We happen to have a little pony of our own (a miniature, to be precise) named Firefly who bears a resemblance to Apple Jack. Heh–looking at the photos, Firefly even has the formless white spots on her face–she almost has a facial marking, but doesn’t, so it’s more like AJ’s freckles. Heh.
Boy 1 adores 'Fly–she’s his “best animal friend”–so I suppose this show is perfect for him.
I am definitely a MLP newbie–I’m still figuring out names–but I’m enjoying being a part of this. I had a few of the ponies when I was a kid, so I’m amused when I see things like the Crystal Ponies–I remember when those came out and how ridiculous I thought it was at the time. Yet somehow, they made it work in the MLP:FIM world. Too cool.
Saw Equestria Girls today. It was ok. Not as good as a true feature-length motion picture, but not bad for basically a straight-to-dvd children’s release. I can see how some bronies embrace it and how some loathe it.
My kid loved it.
I wonder if too much attention was paid to it, if it was a big distraction… if that’s what caused S3 to decline in quality. I am quite sure that’s the reason it declined in quantity. I hate waiting until Nov for new episodes, but at least this tides us over for that 6-month span between seasons.
Most striking for me was seeing so many bronies at once, the fearful look in some of their eyes at the cheering, chattering, singing, and dancing representatives of the real target demographic. I’d say it was an equal mix of families and no-kid bronies, theater about 1/3 full. My kid was the only child in MLP clothes, but I did hear one girl singing Winter Wrap Up in the bathroom.
I’m not sure what you mean by a standard mirror dimension story, but what basically happens is
Twilight goes through a mirror into a human world and there are counterparts to just about everyone in Equestria, and many of the things in Equestria. It’s not exactly the same as Equestria, but enough that there are jokes about what’s the same, what’s different.
