My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - General Discussion [edited title]

I realize I got a little, um, pompous about Pinkie. Buzzkill.

So hey, third page! How about them Cutie Mark Crusaders?

Is it me or does Rainbow Dash ask out Pinkie Pie at 4M51? - YouTube

“You’re not as annoying as I thought. You wanna hang out?” A back handed compliment followed by a noncommital suggestion. If Rainbow Dash were a hipster, that would be the ultimate mating call. Or if she were a member of the pick up community–she has a great name and peacocks like a mutha.

Hipster credentials:

I once amused myself thinking of the personalities the ponies could represent. College girl stereotypes seem to fit best:

Rainbow Dash is the Lesbian Until Graduation, hence the “dash”.
Twilight Sparkle is the kind of college student who’s either on team Edward or team Jacob.
Applejack is the booze hound.
Rarity is a born-again Christian who seldom puts out.
Pinkie Pie is the slut. She is referred to by her genitals, after all.
Nothing on Futtershy, I wouldn’t want to hurt her feelings.

Nothing on Fluttershy, eh? I see her as a good natured R.A. type. She doesn’t so much ferret out pot smokers as she does approach them and ask them if they wouldn’t maybe rather play a nice tournament of Who Can Be Quiet the Longest–it’s loads of fun, doncha think? She kind of reminds me of a female Mr. O’Neill on “Daria” in terms of vocal mannerisms so dorky R.A. seems perfect. And yes, she’s shy but she does have the Stare.

I’d call you out on a duel for this if it weren’t true. Twi’s a bright little geek, but she does seem like the kind of person who’d enjoy Twilight as a guilty pleasure.

So, Twilight likes Twilight? How conceited.

I dunno, she’s seemed pretty dismissive of romance to date… witness her reactions to Spike’s crush on Rarity, for example. She strikes me as more the Harry Potter (err, Harry Trotter) type.

Alright, these equine-related puns have got to stop! I will tolerate no such horseplay in this thread.

Reminds me of how this guy came up with a series of funny articles on what Dungeons & Dragons character types the Ponies resemble:

Twilight Sparkle - Wizard. Alignment: Lawful Studious.

Pinkie Pie - Bard. Alignment Chaotic Shiny.

Rarity - Rogue. Alignment: Neutral Fabulous.

Applejack - Ranger. Alignment: Lawful Git 'er done.

Fluttershy - Druid. Alignment: Neutral Adorable.

Rainbow Dash - Barbarian. Alignment: Chaotic Zoom.

I’ve gotta say I love Winter Wrap-Up. It’s a nice worldbuilding episode with a song that will never leave your head, and each character gets a nice little role.

Also, tossing in my vote for Rarity. She’s just a great character, IMO, and it’s easier to appreciate her when you consider her fashion shtick as her being an artist, not an obsessive shopaholic.

JSYK, I didn’t watch this show until like 3 days ago, so I’m working my way slowly through the eps. Just watched suited for success and oh my god, I almost peed myself when I saw that Hoity Toity’s cutiemark was a fan.

If there’s one problem with the show, it’s a reticence to use songs. Pinkie Pie will sing sometimes and of course, I just saw Rarity’s number in SfS, but frankly, there should be at least one song per episode.

Writing and producing animated musical numbers is a hefty task. I’d rather they do a smaller number of great songs than a larger number of less-memorable ones.

In addition, the show uses non-Pinkie musical numbers the way they’re actually used in musicals: as a way of giving voice to important ideas or inner monologues that would be difficult to convey in spoken dialogue with the same level of emotional impact. Part of doing that well is knowing when not to do a musical number. In a predominantly non-musical context like MLP:FiM, I think a sparing use of songs makes the songs we do get feel even more like “big moments.” If there were a new song every episode, I don’t think songs like “Art of the Dress” or “Winter Wrap Up” would feel as important to the fabric of the show as they do.

IOW, sometimes less is more.

And I feel that using them as rarely as they do makes them seem a little weird and out of place.

Eh, I just counted up. Out of 26 episodes, 9 have some kind of singing, 4 of which are full-blown musical numbers and 5 are Pinkie making something up. (Maybe just 4; I can’t remember if Pinkie has a song in Ticket Master.) That’s a pretty solid chunk of the show, and they’re all spaced out pretty evenly through the season. That puts singing pretty solidly into the ‘uncommon, but not unheard of or weird’ category. The musical numbers are placed pretty appropriately, I think, and if there was an insistence on one per episode they’d start feeling shoehorned in.

Plus it helps make the show generally more accessible. Some folks adore musical numbers and like that the show has them. Some folks actually dislike musical numbers of any kind, so the existence of episodes without singing lets them enjoy the show as well.

Not to mention it also aids with [del]indoctrination[/del] introducing someone to the show, particularly if it’s someone who thinks the show is girly. Some parts are certainly more girly than others, and a fair number of people consider musical numbers girly, so being able to show them episodes that have a minimum of girliness (like Applebuck Season) gets them interested enough to accept the girlier parts.

the herd must grow

Poor people!

I know. :frowning:

She has two, actually.

I haven’t voted on the poll as my favourite pony changes every time I watch the show.

I used to think Pinkie Pie was terrible, but then I realised that’s kind of the point of the character. She’s meant to be annoying. The other characters react to her as such. I loved the moment in Over the Barrel, where the bison were about to call off their attack, then PP started singing and they went into a rampage.

She’s kind of like Jar-Jar in Starwars, many people hate her, but they don’t realise, the despised Fool is necessary to make the most of story.

Granted, she’s still my least favourite as she’s way too much of a “cartoon character”.

Confound those ponies, they drive me to listen to Katy Perry!

(Seriously…never heard any of her songs in my life, but this image, tapdancing, as it is between ‘ridiculously wrong’ and ‘utterly adorable’* means I need to listen to Last Friday Night…)

  • Seriously…the top right and bottom left corner images, stripped of the context that makes it clear it’s skinny dipping and streaking…totally cute, especially Twilight wearing Celestia’s crown.
