My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Now I’m speaking from ‘lack of knowledge’, rather than specific knowledge, but I’m 99% sure that the origin for cutie marks given is original to FiM. Though, obviously, even prior to that, they were given personalities that matched their name and symbol.

As to calling them ‘cutie marks’, that goes back at least to G3 (the prior run, starting in 2003), when my friend’s daughter was into them (first I heard the term was when my friend brought it up when talking about an MLP costume she was making for her daughter). Though I don’t know if it started with G3 or G2 (mid-late 90s).

I particularly like the fact that the main character is a grad student who occasionally does some research!

“Where did you find it?”

“Under E for Elements of Harmony”

I’ve been trying to get my friends into this, but they refuse to watch it on the basis they might obsess like i have,

bump Another guy (mid-twenties) giving this show a thumbs-up. It’s both cute and awesome!

I considered posting a FiM thread but chickened out. :o This show owns.

What do you get when you combine FiM and Weird Al?

The Pony Polka. It’s Al-Approved!

Awesome!

So who saw the episode with Princess Celestia’s bird? Pretty nice…Pinkie Pie pigging out at the party was priceless. And Fluttershy’s mini freak out before the party was way too familiar to me…

I had trouble enjoying it, other than the basic antics any kid would giggle at (Celestia tricking the Cakes was pretty funny). One of the reasons I like the show is the bright and clear personalities of the various characters, and Twilight, so far as I can tell, simply acted too out-of-character for me. In TVTrope parlance, she was carrying the Idiot Ball.

I mean, think about it. Celestia’s been her teacher ever since she was really young (as we saw in the latest episode). Twilight proudly considers herself Celestia’s best and closest pupil, and that’s backed up by the hug they gave each other at the end of the pilot episode. She’s been in regular communication with Celestia for a full season (however long that is in the show, they specifically don’t worry about continuity) and they’ve even met face to face several times during the show.

So why, pray tell, does Twilight not have a single clue how Celestia would react to Fluttershy nicking the bird? She has mountains of evidence that Celestia is a generous, kind, and understanding ruler, but she spazzes and runs in precisely the opposite direction with her conclusions and displays none of the intellect and rationality she should be known for.

I know, in a lot of ways she’s a kid and socially underdeveloped, but she’s not stupid. Up until that episode the show has impressed me with its ability to not dumb its characters down for the sake of the Aesop; any foolishness has been an established facet of one character or another’s personality. I just can’t buy that Twilight’s behavior was in-character for her.

Also apparently MLP-staff approved.

It’s a great vid…the choices for Don 'Cha and Gold Digger were inspired (Pretty obvious, to be sure, but, still, inspired).

On a more directly show-related note…anyone catch Twilight Sparkle’s mum in her segment of Cutie Mark Chronicles?

Coat’s the wrong colour (a better colour, IMO), but the hair and cutie mark are right. It’s G1 Twilight! Rather a different design than she would have got had she been the main character, but definitely Twilight.

Also from Cutie Mark Chronicles - more evidence that Rarity’s accent is an affectation…young Rarity doesn’t have it at all, even as sporadically as she does as an adult.

Also I ran across this collage the other day, and I think it nicely sums up why this incarnation of MLP is cool. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah, I had trouble with that as well. (Also, Philomena creeped me out…) It was pretty obvious to the audience that Princess Celestia is a sweet, caring pony, but I don’t know why Twilight didn’t see that. I haven’t seen the newest one (with the owl, right?) yet but I’m looking forward to it.

I liked the latest Cutie Mark one though all the Rainbow Dash love tends to leave me cold. She’s not my fave pony so whenever they lay on the “Rainbow Dash is AWESOME” stuff, it gets a little old. I did enjoy seeing Spike as a baby (well, newborn baby) dragon, though. And seeing Pinkie Pie’s Amish family (LOVED that she grew upon a rock farm). Also, Applejack in the big city was cute. Hope we get the chance to see her parents, though. Oh, and Fluttershy’s, “You girls would be surprised but I was just a bit shy when I was your age” comment–really loved that.

Maybe she knows Celestia better than you think!

Dash’s obnoxious 'tude is clearly a front to hide low self esteem and self doubt. Witness her breakdown in Sonic Rainboom or outrageous cheating when confronted with the possibility that Applejack may be better at sports.

Oh yeah, that one really pissed me off. Why did nopony else address the fact she was cheating in the competition? Even Applejack only did at the end.

Oh, have we not mentioned Derpy Hooves at all? I just had to link to this fan made vid. It never fails to make me smile.

It’s probably because Dash is a pegasus, so nobody considers her using her wings to be ‘cheating’, since they’re a natural part of her abilities, and Applejack didn’t insist on handicapping her that way to begin with.

I am gonna tolerate and love the SHIT outta you

Hi everypony! I want Pinkie Pie to do a version of “Friday” - now that would be somethin’ Partyin, partyin, YEAH!
I loved Fluttershy as a cheerleader “Yay!”

(I also watched all the eps in a couple of days, and now I find myself going to Ponychan and Equestria Daily - I can’t get enough ponies!!)
This is a great spot for info and some background:

Oh, Fluttershy’s cheering was one of her best moments. “Too loud?” Just want to grab her and cuddle the beans out of her.

Awww… for you, Freudian Slit
