I just got an old Pismo PowerBook with OS 10.3.9 installed.
I’m not impressed. It’s trying too hard to be like a PC. I don’t want my computer to try to read my mind. I just want it to do what I tell it, not have it second-guess me.
I can’t even shut down anymore, without my computer asking me if I “sure.” On the old operating system, “shut down” meant “shut down” and my computer TURNED OFF. Now when I select “shut down” it says something like, “Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now? If you do nothing, the system will shut down automatically in 118 seconds.”
It’s incredibly annoying.
So my question is: How can I make it just shut down when I select “shut down”?
You can also install FruitMenu, a utility for customizing the Apple menu. It allows you to replace the standard Log out … /Shut Down … commands to skip the confirmation dialogue.
What do you mean, “trying to hard to be like a PC?” That’s a Mac. That’s what they do. If anything, the reason why PCs now do that type of bullshit is an attempt to emulate the “user friendly” Mac GUI, which consists of cute little radio pop up boxes saying things like, “I know you clicked this, did you really mean to click this?”
“Yes.”
“Are you really sure?”
“Yes.”
“You didn’t mean to click that instead?”
“No.”
“You sure you don’t want to reconsider clicking this? It deletes things.”
“No.”
“I don’t know, I think you need a 30 minute cool down period before you make this decision. Come back to me then.”
My old Mac (iMac 9.1) just did whatever I told it. If I said “shut down,” it shut down without second-guessing me. There are other features I miss, too. I want my Apple Menu back. Now I have to use that inconvenient moving Dock that won’t let me separate the Trash Can from it so that I can put it where it belongs: in the bottom right hand corner. Oh, sure, I can move the whole Dock to the right-hand side, but then it pops up everytime I try to scroll a web page. How annoying is that?
I also miss the window shade feature, where you could just double click and it would hide the page, but leave the title bar. If I double click now, it moves it to that stupid Dock. I’ve recently started using the “move curser to bottom left corner” feature to find my pages, but why did they mess with the window shading at all? It worked perfectly!
My PC is always trying to read my mind, trying to do what it thinks I want instead of just doing what I tell it. My new Mac feels like it went to the same school.
