I doubt I’ll ever be called on to give a Memorial Day speech, but if I am I’m going to, uh, borrow part of this one, with due credit of course.
Today I’ll be visiting my father’s grave/ He was in the Army during the Korean War. Luckily he never saw combat, or I might not be here today. I was lucky too, being stationed in Korea during 1976.

My middle name comes from my uncle, Pvt. Roy B Grigsby, an amphibious truck driver during World War II.
On April 28, 1944, he was deployed for training at Slapton Sands, Devon, UK, in preparation for the D-Day invasion. The convoy of four LSTs and escorts was attacked by a group of Kriegsmarine E-boats during the early morning hours. His LST and one other were lost, as was my uncle who died that night, 90 months before I was born. Never having known him, I miss him to this day.

The wife and I yesterday visited the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, aka Punchbowl Cemetery since it is in Punchbowl crater. They were sprucing up the place for Memorial Day today, although it generally always looks well cared for. It’s closed on all federal holidays except Memorial Day.
