Coincidentally, I had a conversation with a co-worker today in which, in all seriousness, he was ranking local all-you-can-eat buffets by how many servings of crab legs you can have “before they get really mad”.
I thought I was a glutton. In truth, I manage to behave myself unless at a Chinese buffet. Or a casino buffet. Yum, crawfish fettucine.
Dolores, hmm you are in Houston, next time my mom gets an urge to go to Red Lobster you might just find a pm from me when you log on. Sorry you got hungry, but if it makes you feel any better, your post made me think of my grandmother’s gumbo. She makes it every Thanksgiving in addition to the usual fare. Mmm Mimi’s gumbo, now I’m hungry.
Thanks for the veni vici vori folks, that has quite the nice ring to it. I will soooo have to remember that. You’d think after 3 years of Latin I’d have figured it out.
As for the price of shrimp, it depends on many factors. If you’re literally in the Gulf of Mexico, you can trade a couple of gallons of milk for three big trash bags filled with shrimp. Once you get onshore, the price goes up. The whole not having to cook or clean up and getting a variety of choices makes it rather worthwhile (for me at least).
As for buffets in general: sometimes they are a good thing, other times one should remember “everything in moderation, nothing in excess” (as if I paid attention to that idea). I did have a friend who would leave the city every summer. Every summer, whichever Chinese restaurant he ate at the most would close before he came back. This bothered him a great deal until I explained that if he was going there all the time and they closed down, that would be bad because he’d be eating them out of house and home, his absence only opened the possibility that their patronage slipped off and he alone couldn’t be responsible for that.
Had I not been in fear of the shrimp, I’d have been all about the scampi too. Mmm shrimp scampi.
Okay, since I just went into work at 10am this morning and opened up the restuarant and got off after 10:30pm this evening I am an authority in this thread. I work for Red Lobster. And have so for 2 yrs. I am too pooped to pop.
Yes, we have all you can eat shrimp for $14.99 per person. Your selection of shrimp is Hand Battered Fried Shrimp, Shrimp Scampi, Shrimp Pasta, Popcorn Shrimp and now they just added Coconut Shrimp Bites (bite sized popcorn shrimp, rolled in coconut) to the list. The Coconut Shrimp Bites are served with a Pina Coloda Dipping Sauce that is outta this world. Your entree includes a side item of your choice and salad. Baked Potato, Garlic Mashed, French Fries, Wild Rice Pilaf, or Steamed Veggies (broc, carrots, yellow squash). And of course our most famous Garlic Cheddar Cheese Biscuits.
You choose 2 of your choice to start off with. And you don’t have to stick with what you initially order. So if you order Fried and Scampi and want a refill of Coconut Shrimp Bites you can switch it around if you like. I really haven’t had too many people over do it this year. However I did have a party of 13 guys last year that was having a contest on who could eat the most shrimp. I had believe it or not over 1500 refills on that order. Don’t worry the tip was worth it. He happened to be an employee who brought a bunch of buddies in from college.
If you are on the Atkins diet you need to stay away from everything that is fried. So a typical Atkins eater would order ~ Shrimp Scampi, Shrimp Pasta w/out the pasta and broc only. Salad doesn’t matter as long as there is no croutons on it. And of course absolutely no biscuits for you. I did the Atkins diet and did very good. When I started Red Lobster 2 yrs ago I was 172lbs size 16. I am now at about 123lbs. and size 6. I can tell an Atkins dieter a mile away and they are always amazed to see my before pictures that I keep in my book. So even if your on a diet we have the food for you! Come on in and enjoy this promotion ends November 28.
Disclaimer: It is $14.99 per person in our area prices may vary.
Having been to Red Lobster thrice over the past month, your post confused me. Then I realized we just have it better here in Canada. The shrimp choice is between broiled garlic shrimp, garlic shrimp alfredo, fried shrimp and popcorn shrimp (for $15.99 Cdn). Since garlic shrimp is a choice, skipping the pasta is superfluous.
Mmmmm. Shrimp. My lifelong goal is to eat the last one; drain the seas dry.
I believe you are talking about the Shrimp Scampi. That is broiled shrimp in a butter wine garlic sauce that comes out piping hot in a black dish. Mmmm they are tasty aren’t they?
I do love seafood, however this place does it for me: Fogo De Chao
Skip the salad bar or go light, skip those damn cheesy biscuit things that defy air, do not touch the twice baked potatoes or those addicting fried bananas, go straight for the meats. Pork, chicken, beef…a true Texans heaven for sure.
All you can snarf lobster and seafood…seriously expensive per person, but wonderful=)
Works out that our roommate likes the front half of the lobster, and i like the tail, so when we went we each grabbed a lobster and she took both front ends and i took both tails back at the table=)
When i was a teen, we went to an all you can eat seafood buffet for my grandpa’s birthday. Great food, but two down sides.
Our party was large enough that we got a seperate room, on the second floor, the buffet was on the first.
They didn’t have a dessert table, but you got a dessert with the meal. They only had two desserts, one had alcohol and so me being under age couldn’t have it, the other was chocolate mouse which I can’t stand. The waitress looked at me dumbfounded when I told her I didn’t want it. She brought me one anyway.
Best meal I have all year is Christmas Eve at my parents’. Crab legs, shrimp scampi, shrimp cocktail, rise pilaf, veggies… mmmmmmm…
Now if I can just convince my family to eat that instead of that nasty turkey on Thanksgiving.
