A few months ago, I had my very first wisdom tooth come through, in the top left corner of my mouth. When it happened, I first noticed it because the back of my jaw was sore, and when I poked it with my tongue (as you do) there was this horrible, unforgiving taste of DEATH. Okay, maybe I exaggerate, but it’s a really nasty, unclean sort of taste. Like if you’ve got a bit of food between your teeth for a few hours, then finally fish it out with some floss. It’s that nasty, multiplied by a factor of… like… Lots.
I thought it was over when the wisdom tooth came through, apart from the occasional piece of food caught in it that goes nasty (the tooth is at a lower level than my other teeth, so if I’m not attentive brushing will sometimes miss it). But oh, was I wrong.
On the same side, bottom now, I think I have another tooth coming through. My jaw hurts, it feels hot on that side and there’s a horrible, stinky, nasty taste of death coming through again. It’s nasty and icky, and I know I shouldn’t poke it, but my tongue keeps creeping back there and going poke… poke.
I should really get me to a dentist, and see if they can do something about the tooth of death. It’s really bad.
You really ought to have those things looked at… wisdom teeth can be impacted and/or infected. IANADentist but there’s something seriously wrong with your particular picture.
Going to dentist on Monday week. I was hoping it’d pass after the first one cleared up, and it seemed to, but now I’m not so sure with this second one. It’s hurty, like real bad.
Thanks for the well wishes. This probably isn’t a good time to be talking on the phone, but I’ve got no sick time left (thanks sinusitis and a couple of bouts of nasty 'flu). It’s been getting hurtier and hurtier all day.
If the bottom one is infected, and it’s not even started to erupt from the gumline, what is the dentist likely to do? Do I get dosed up on antibiotics until it comes through? Or will the dentist go digging into my jawbone and rip it out with pain and screaming?
Inquiring minds would like to know - and I need to know if I should book some annual leave soon…
I just had my wisdom teeth out about a month ago, and I know the taste that you speak of. ‘Death’ is a good way of describing it.
What I discovered was that there was food trapped in the empty sockets and it had started to…ferment, I think. Nasty. The dentist had given me this syringe thingy to squirt it with water and flush out all the gross food. Using that many times a day helped. Also, probably not dentist approved, but sometimes I would chew gum and press it into the socket, and then the food particles would stick to it and come out. And that minty fresh flavor got rid of the breath of death.
My dentist also told me that the sockets usually got infected a few months after the procedure because food would get stuck in there and the new skin would grow over it.
I would imagine he may have to lance the area and drain the infection, but IANAD, so I really have no idea. Good luck
