My Nephew got the shit kicked out of him

Mmm. That’s why I asked - it could end up as Martin’s did, or she could just have pins and needles for a while, or she could be less lucky and end up with reduced movement/feeling. It seems to be one of those tricky things like back damage.

Your nephew’s girlfriend sounds like a keeper! But the events Don’t Ask and others relate make a perfect case for the concealed carrying of firearms.

What the fuck? How is having a cnocealed firearm going to help you if you’re getting a bottle smashed on your head from behind? Or do you think he should have had a gun in his hand during the verbal confrontation? Perhaps you didn’t grow up around guns and gun users, so you don’t know the rule: “If you’re going to be stupid enough to pull a gun on someone, at least be smart enough to use it.” A gun is a terrific tool for putting holes in things, like tin cans and skulls. It is not a magic wand to prevent you from being vicitmized. The main reason people want about handgun control these days is because of people who don’t get that.

Learn to read and you’ll see that Quartz was refering to an event decribed by Don’t Ask, not the event in the Op.

Agreed. A concealed firearm would have been of no use in this case. Except perhaps in that the victim may have felt encouraged to de-escalate the situation by walking away or escaping sooner, if it were possible (and it doesn’t sound as though it were possible). If he had simply brandished the firearm (i.e., committed assault with a deadly weapon, simply by pointing a gun at someone, without firing), he would likely be in prison now, and perhaps worse. It takes time to draw a weapon from concealed, disengage the safety, and while lying on the floor being beaten this feat would be quite a task.

However, if another witness saw the danger to two lives, and fired rounds into the bodies of the assailants to stop the severe, life-threatening beating of two people lying prone on the ground, I wouldn’t have a problem with that. In that sense, the comment about CCW is makes some sense. It’s unlikely such a person would have been at this party, bone sober, etc., though.

Similarly for the events in Don’t Ask’s story. Unless the victim had known from, say, 20-30 feet away that he was going to be severely beaten, and had the skills to stop 4 assailants cold in their tracks, and the fortitude to deal with the fact that he would most likely be incarcerated, while the facts were ascertained at the very least, and saddled with at least one civil suit, he could have been in big trouble. At the very least, I think he would have been compelled to draw his weapon once the assailants reached about 30 feet or so from him, and, if they didn’t stop immediately, or run, stop each and every one of them with his weapon. That would be some fancy shooting, but it would be his only option if he couldn’t escape.

Get the girlfriend a really, really, really nice Xmas present, Bus.

Sorry, Flying Dutchman. I’m sleepy, & got this Thread scrambled with Bus Guy’s daughter’s problem.
