My Nephew, the War Hero

This is neither mundane, nor pointless, but nevertheless…

I just got an e-mail from my sister. My nephew was just awarded his second Bronze Star.

The skinny little kid who I used to play video games with is now in Special Forces. He finished a tour of Iraq, where he nearly single-handedly conquered the country (to hear my sister-in-law tell it), and was then sent to Afghanistan. There he apparently gathered intelligence from some villagers he has befriended, and led his squad in an attack on a group of Taliban resisters and broke up the group, shot the leader, and arrested everyone else.

This is like the movies!

My sister attached a .jpg of the citation for the award, but it got truncated or something, and all I can read is a description of the action that got him the award, and something about a V.

Anyway, I am darn pleased, my son is awe-struck, and my sister-in-law and brother are on cloud nine.

Well done, dudester - you have made us proud indeed!

Regards,
Shodan

Shodan, tell him that there’s a bunch of ordinary Americans back here who are grateful for his work, too!

Shodon, we both know that the armed forces don’t give out Bronze Stars for perfect Sunday School attendance. Especially the BS with v device. V is for valor. It is a big deal and two of them is a bigger deal. I’m happy for your nephew and wish him joy. More than that, I’m glad that he survived the experience and hope for his safe return.

Hear, hear!

Damn, that’s great! I’m proud of your nephew, and I hope he comes home safe and sound. Thank him for me too!

I am thinking of forwarding this link to him in Afghanistan (he actually has an e-mail address), so thanks to you all for the warm wishes.

And to any other military personnel who are or who have served, the same thanks to you for your service. We are proud of you.

Regards,
Shodan

Pass along to him that he done good!
Also stay safe and come home soon.

Wow. Outstanding. Shodan’s Nephew kick some ass and come back safe.

Now I can claim that one of my imaginary friends has a nephew that has won two bronze stars. The six degrees of Kevin Bacon just get stretched farther and farther. I really have no reason anymore to ever leave my computer, with all the go-getter friends and family of Dopers. I can live vicariously through them.

However, the real question is:

Can he sell 100 boxes of girl scout cookies? Please don’t hurt me.

awesome!!!

Evidently *Shodan/b]'s bloodline is closely connected to that of Rambo (except without the bloodlust).

*I remember in one of the books there being something about mindless bloodlust. No offense WRT that character attribute was intended:)

Outstanding!

Here’s to a succesful and safe and prompt completion of his tour, and may he for a long time regale the grandkids with war stories. He won’t even need to embellish them!

Please congratulate your nephew on my behalf. You guys are so proud of his accomplishments, and that’s wonderful! Best of luck to him, and a speedy trip home!!

Please tell him that he has done good and there are many grateful americans who appreciate him doing his duty. Good for him!!! Congratulations from the bottom of my heart.

Ditto the above.

Please thank him for his service and let him know we are proud of him.

Best wishes for a quick and safe return!

Wooohooooooooooooooo!

Tell him we are so proud of him.

And tell him thank you.

Please send your nephew my thanks and admiration. Real heroes are rare these days.

I am proud of him. And very jealous.
