I tried to read the first one, and though it’s the kind of thing I usually enjoy, I couldn’t get into it at all. I got bored quickly; just didn’t grab me. But with all the raving about it, perhaps I should try again.
In a slight hijack:
If you enjoy books with a similar cynical outlook on life, I highly recommend the book(s) I’m currently reading – “Sir Apropos of Nothing” and the next in the series, “The Woad to Wuin.” I can’t wait for the last in the trilogy. I don’t like the parts where the book goes “out of character” so to speak, and makes jokes about the real world, but the rest is great, and made me laugh out loud numerous times.
(sorry for the hijack but I needed to rave!)
I doubt it. My money’s on Lemony snicket revealing himself to be a Higly intelligent, sadistic demon from the N-th level of hell(who really, really, REALLY, likes puns), destroys the planet, and the robots and angel monster thingies that do strage stuff from neon genesis evangelion blow up stuff. And everyone dies. Except the big robots.
adore the SoUE. I’m totally fervent. Lemony Snicket is one of my favourite prose writers. On the other hand, I’ve been disappointed by the works of Daniel Handler, for whom Snicket is a pseudonym. Weird.
I walked for two hours in the rain to get to Borders to buy a copy of The Carnivorous Carnival, only to discover when I got there that I didn’t have any money. So I stayed at the store and read the book, and then walked all the way home. In the rain. I kid you not.
The best part was that I live in Southern CA and we haven’t had a full day of rain since then. I managed to pick the only rainy day of the whole bloody season. Unfortunate, n’est-ce pas?
I am disappointed to discover that I’m in the minority around here. I heard good things about the books and so I bought the first one to give it a go, and found it thoroughly unimpressive. Not only did I not like it, I actively disliked it. In general, I love children’s books by Lemony Snickett did nothing for me. I also thought the book was incredibly overpriced, at $20AU for a book that I read in under an hour.
I would love to know what in particular you all enjoyed about them (the thing that I completely missed).
