My new electric push lawn mower has headlights on it

Ooookaaay.

I’m looking outside, it’s getting kind of dark… Um… No just no. I’ll wait till it’s real dark. That’s the ticket. Or I’ll wait until 5am. I want to be a good neighbor.

But I’m dying to try out those headlights. What a weird thing…

Not really weird. It extends the mowing period into twilight, and can be especially useful in detecting objects on the lawn you might miss as the sun goes down.

I call those dog surprises ‘land mines’ I haven’t mown grass in … 35 years, but I used to do a LOT of it. Masse Ferguson tractors, Cub Cadets, and and endless stream of Toro lawn mowers.

I won’t be plowing snow much longer though.

These battery operated lawn equipment are the bomb.

I can’t wait till they have “hidden dog poop” detectors. I pick up every day but still miss a pile occasionally. We are currently in the mow every 5 days period (grass growing super rapidly) and if you wait till 6 days, the poop is getting lost. Also, we are already up to 14-15 hours of daylight so not sure I would ever need headlights.

Do doggie ‘land mines’ umm… mulch?

Not well. Usually the mower tire or my shoe finds them. I should do a scientific study on this.

I’ll help with a GIS system and GPS. 'Cause, it’s the only way to be sure.

My gosh, it’s raining. In May. My Wife just drove up to our mountain house. 22" of snow expected this week.

Yes, that is a big reason why we moved. I’ve been beaten. I admit it.

Seems like the headlights would drain the battery faster. Can you turn them off for daylight use?

We have/had next door neighbors that like to mow in the dark. I have no idea what’s up with that. Seems quite unsafe.

(They seem to have moved out over the weekend.)

Simple: vampires need to avoid things like unruly lawns that will attract unwanted neighbor attention. And sometimes they are between familiars, so they have to do these types of chores themselves, when they can.

I’m thinking that the cost of cheap bright LEDs is so low these days that the cost and power draw to add them is minimal and now you can raise the mower price because Fancy Lawnmower Features.

If they’re anything like the headlights on my mower, they’re not exactly bright. Good enough for when you wait for it to cool off in the evening before mowing, and push it a bit too far into the twilight, but not too bright. Similar to a $10 LED flashlight, not a $50 LED flashlight.

Obviously they use some battery, but considering I can mow my lawn about 2.5 times on one charge, it doesn’t really matter.

Congrats on the move! The battery powered yard care tools are the shit. We are in the EGO ecosystem. So you feel better–mowed the lawn at 76 degrees Saturday, snowed a foot yesterday. Enjoy the lowlands!

Bingo. It’s really no power draw, and I think you do need to turn them on.

Now electric mowers are quieter, but they ain’t that quiet. Your still beating the grass into submission.

What really makes sense is headlights on snowblowers – I think pretty much all of them have lights. Because the days are so much shorter in winter. Also, if you have to be somewhere, clearing your driveway is essential, whether it’s day or night.

Thanks. We are EGO too. So far, they work great. String trimmer and blower too. What is wonderful about that brand, is that all of the batteries are interchangeable. Maybe others are too, I don’t know. I’ve never used more than half of a battery worth of power. If it runs out, slap it in the charger, and use the one from the string trimmer. Great system.

I’m turning into a full fledged annoying suburbanite.

A foot of snow? Where are you? My house on Hoosier was supposed to get dumped on but so far only about 3 inches according to my Wife.

Good point. In a very odd way, COVID made my life so much easier. I worked and still work from home. I could plow during the day. Sol is much better than LED.

Ha. I had a 8hp Toro snowblower that I tried in the mountains. Um… no way. But down here I’ll just get an electric two stage EGO. Should be fine. Both my Wife and I have SUV’s.

A huge thing in snow country (IMHO) is to have your driveway go downhill from your house. You have a much better chance of getting out. Getting home can suck, but at least you can get out and plan on how to get home.

Montana, 45.3 degrees north. Our snowblower is a 74" on a front PTO on our 52HP tractor. Back in Telluride even that wouldn’t have been enough–backhoes and loaders… It will be fun to watch you assimilate to the features of a big city, good and bad.

My mom used to mow our lawn with a self-propelled Craftsman mower after getting home from work. Not only did she do it of her own accord, she wouldn’t let anyone else do it. I’m pretty sure it was her excuse to get the hell away from the rest of the family for an hour or so on a weekly basis.

She would often mow at dusk out of necessity and as a teen I always thought about inventing a lawn mower with head lights. While I’m sure they already existed back then on riding mowers, I don’t recall running across a push mower with them as a feature.

So, there is a use-case for them.
